Am I wasting my time?
« on: February 07, 2005, 01:32:49 AM »
I got this small FLA battery (free), a Power PRC-1230X that was boiled dry. I just added some distilled water to it, and am currently got it on my charger at 10A.

Any wagers as to how this will turn out?

Is it worth what I paid for it?

Should I be doing anything different like higher or lower amps?

I don't currently have a desulphator, a future project I guess.

It appears I have been wasting my time ~6 hours charging and it is at 0.7V open voltage.

Oh well, the only loss was the distilled water, and the small hole I banged into the bathroom floor when I dropped the bloody thing.

I guess I'll hack the Pb lugs off of it and take it back to the recycling depot.

Was it charging at 10 amps for 6 hrs.?

You weren't charging this in the bathroom?

Keep in mind...batteries can explode.

Yup I was charging it in the bathtub.

Bathroom has good ventilation, washdown and a enameled steel tub for containment of mishaps.

The charger set @ 10A was closely monitored for temperature & gassing, never even seen a bubble or felt any warmth.

My little multimeter doesn't have a ammeter so I don't know how much the battery was actually drawing.

Your charger doesn't have a built in ammeter?

Why don't you look into making a capacitor charger? Plenty of help on this board on how to make or buy one, might be a fun experience for you...nothing like the satisfaction of rejuvenating 'junk' back into something useful!

                  Have Fun!

Glad to hear you're being careful.

            ...but stop dropping batteries! LOL!

                  ( :>) Norm.

Your multimeter probably has an ammeter, that's part of the reason they call it a

multimeter....(I could be wrong) mine says in

one segment of the dial 10A...also one jack in red...10A  fused....go to TomW's website one

section he tells how to make a shunt for measuring amps.

The charger pictured above is the one I was using.

I don't ever remember the needle not being all the way to the left.

My multimeters are both the autoranging mini clamshell radioshack ones VAC VDC CONT Ohms and what I think is a diode checker.

I've been wanting to get my hands on one of the radioshack multimeters that have a rs232 port on it. Looks like Canadian Radioshack has gone all dollarstore style in the multimeter dept.

I guess I'll have to wait for a kick ass Fluke to fall from the sky.

Boo hoo, wahh wahh, and woe is me.

RadioShack and Fluke have a deal going. Flukes with RadioShack stickers.

They should be around soon.
