nice find - wincharger
« on: April 07, 2005, 05:30:22 PM »
About a week ago my nephew was showing me a place he was going to try to buy, and as we approached the place the first thing I noticed was an old Wincharger on the roof of an old shed outback.  I asked my nephew if he was interested in keeping it and when he said not really I approcched the guy selling the place and offered to procure it, and he agreed.  So for the modest sum equivalent to about 4  6-packs of beer I had me an old wincharger in pretty fair shape.  Its a 6V unit and from the wincharger.com site I believe it might be a model 611 made in the 1930's.  The gent selling the place told me he got it from a friend in Missouri about 10 yrs ago who told him it was a Zenith brand (Zenith bought out Wincharger in 1935 and marketed these 6 V units under several brand names).

The tail feathers and boom are not original, and the prop on it is not original but the guy had the original prop which he gave me.  He said he had someone carve the one thats on it using the original as a pattern.

That is the original prop leaning up against the base.

I interfaced a hand drill to the generator shaft (without the prop) and found that the unit reached 6 V at about 400 RPM and was at 14V at a little over 1000 RPM.  The brushes are in very good shape, as is everything but the prop.
