Intro
« on: May 14, 2005, 02:39:04 AM »
Finally decided to register after a long time lurking, thought I'd say hi.

I've been interested in RE for a long time, not so much fearing y2k or mass anarchy, but I think because people naturally have an interest in being self sufficient and independent.  I haven't had a good spot to try out many of my ideas, with tiny city lots, but I think that could change soon.

One of the most interesting ideas I've seen is the solar closet idea Nick Pine has been talking about for years on the usenet boards.  It seems like a simple & cheap way to store lots of BTU's.  Providing for a homes heat & hot water is a big step.  I've spent a lot of time wondering about ways to use that cheap heat to generate electricity too, even at low efficiency it could be a good source.  I'd like to design a whole system around that energy source, providing for all the energy needs of a home.  I'm interested in the discussions here along the heat engine lines for that reason.

I guess my favorite thing about this site is the focus on 'what can I build at home' with very little time spent on shopping lists.  I hope I can help out a little here and there.

Welcome!

I lurked here for a long while before jumping in too. One nice thing about this place is the Admin do a pretty good job of policing it. From what I've seen of the usenet RE forums, policing can be a good thing.

If it wasn't for this site I would have never learned about the Ebay solar cell rejects. I've got 400W of panel already built with enough cells for 200W more. $700 in cells and about $300 in materials comes out to $1.67/watt.

I'm working on getting a turbine up too, though I'll likely buy it rather than make it.

Hope to see more of you around here!

Buy it?

ECM and Jerry blades. Cheap. Easy.

I can't see how they sell a 403 anymore.

Uhhh, 403, no way. You think I don't read anything here? ;-) I just bought one from our hosts! I like the dual axis design but didn't really want to carve blades, wind coils and pour resin. I suppose I could do it but the money I make in my day job just about equals the time I'd have to put into one of these and I can stay an expert in my field and my wind generator will be built by experts. I like to DIY some stuff but this project just didn't appeal to me that much. Now if a DanB kit was available for something silly like $500, I'd likely go that way but from scratch, there seems to be a steep learning curve on these, especially with the blades.

There you go!

Now thats what I'm talking about.

I could build a PV in my sleep.

Except the frame, moisture stuff, backing,...

I could pump gas up the street for the same amount of time, and buy double the factory made PV, compared to the time and what money I would save building the whole thing.

I still can not get away from this homebrew wind power thing...

Wonder if the guys who can build windmills in there sleep dream of solar?
