Beginnings of a new windfarm

Hi All,

Here are a couple of pics of the soon-to-be wind turbine farm we saw yesterday .  There will be 22 units at this site. For perspective the trees beside the completed unit are 40- 45 feet high. There are currently 2 units up and the others are blade-assembled lying on the ground like some giant kid's abandoned toys!

The installation starts just north of Goderich Ontario. It's about a quarter mile east of Hwy 21 and each unit is about a quarter mile from the next.

  So... ya think a blade set will fit in the back of my S10?  They probably would'nt miss a set... would they?  Finder's keepers right?

  I'm in the 10 mile radius of the local airport and the ceiling we can fly in here is 3000 ft.   I wonder if the blades would be picked up on radar and spark a ufo blip.  

  It appears to be a total height of around 280 to 300 ft including the blade above the tower.  I'd like to have just the tower... should I bring a trailer?  ;o)

Hi Ed,

I believe these things are 1.8MW Vestas V-80's.

One blade is about 120 feet long. The nacelle weighs 138,915 lb. Better put those helper springs in the S-10!

They are quite perty. I personally love the sight and sound of these new gennys. Soft "woa" as they go by.

They look like a little smaller blade but they stand 200' themselves. Quite impressive to stand under.

there are 25 almost finished  just north of shellburn and 64 proposed for north of singhampton. ive got a a few photos as well but i am unshure as to how to make them a good size. they look exactly the same .  i can understand why some people object . they can be seen from 14 klms. away. they do dwarf the land scape but i find them exciteing. much better for us than coal or neuclear

And these things typically put out enough power per year for 225 residences?  The site doesn't say, but that's about $9,000.00 per residence.  Is it worth it?

Divide that 9K by 10 to get a more accurate cost per resident, and that's just to reach a pay off cost. Since these things are designed for a minimum 20 year life cycle, the next 10 years are profit for the company that owns them.

Makes a little more sense that way, as long as the wind blows!

Hey, those things are made down here nearby to me!!

I've seen every single one of them go by on the semi trucks!!

Full-on convoy of 4 trucks, one blade each and a major portion of the nacelle on the fourth.  Oh, and don't forget the "Wide Load" sign carriers, too!!  :p

Those look like the same units they are installing near Shelburne.The towers are 300 feet high and the blades are about 150 feet long(each)
