free wvo is all most over
« on: November 10, 2005, 05:34:49 AM »
i'v been getting fryer oil for free for two years.

today i got told that the new rendering plant, that just opened 10 miles away, will

now be paying the restaurants for there used oil.

the restaurants used to pay them to take the oil.

the good news is that i'll still get the bakeries oil.

no more surplus oil for george.insert sad face here.

i think with fuel prices going up, this will be a trend.

just thought ya should know.

Yeah it was only a matter of time. Soon enough a plant of some kind will open here. If not, enough people will be wanting it that they will run out. Better start growing some corn.

My sources are dwindling also. So I tried to buy used oil from the place that picks up the oil. They said it's a commodity and listed on the stock exchanges. That was my first clue. If I buy 6) 55 gal drums of unrefined oil out of thier tanks, it will cost $2.57 a gallon. Uh... math isn't my best subject, but diesel is around that price now!

You can still beat their price at the restaurant end although you will probably be looking at becoming their full service grease contractor.

Ain't nothing free anymore.  Yeah, yellow grease is a commodity that has more value as a cosmetic, lubricating oil, or food item.  I am also finding it difficult to find another junked hot water heater.  Some plumbers now have contracts with scrap metal haulers so they won't give you one.  Then there is some kind of law that makes it illegal for scrap metal yards to sell back to the public (at least here there is).  Waste motor oil has a cradle to the grave policy that makes the person that drained the oil pan responsible for it til it is recycled or burned.  That makes garages deathly afraid of letting anyone other than their contracted disposal service touch their oil.

The scavengers of society won't be missed until it's too late.  How I long for the days when you could just drive around and haul off other peoples junk and nobody seemed to mind.

The ethanol people are all excited about using algae farms for alcohol production.  I wonder if there's any oil to be had out of that stuff.

I contacted a fast food resaraunt about getting some oil and they said they were getting paid for it (not paying to haul it away) and they said they have a contract they have to give them all of it when I offerd to buy some.

Hmm, maybe I am lucky I never got a desiel car/truck yet, desiel here is ALLOT more than gas now for some reason. It used to be nearly the same price, sometine a few cents lower or higher but close enough to call the same. Now about half a buck a gallon more, and for awhile it was a buck more :(

I still have about 150 gallons to play with latter, but my freind closed his restaraunt so I won't be getting his either now.

How long before we have to pay for wind or it becomes considered an inviromental hazzrd?

Maybe I will just start eating allot more fried foods and donuts, make my own used oil.

Correction: The algae farm thing is for producing oil not ethanol.

Then you'll get sued for selling food that might make someone fat, like McDonalds.  Although I think they passed a law or something to limit that sort of thing.  Rich Hagen

Nah.

They just figure that if there's enough untapped value that a hobbiest can extract some (i.e. WVO is cheap and works in engines and stuff) there's enough that a commercial operation with major economy of scale could be even more profitable.  So they set one up and pocket the untapped value themselves.

This sucks up the supply and/or drives its price up far enough that hobbiests - WITHOUT commercial economy of scale levels - are no longer saving money compared to buying their stuff through the usual outlets.  (It won't drive the price up so far that the commercial guys aren't making money - because they won't pay so much that they're no longer profitable, and nobody's bidding higher.)
