Ametek 30 VDC Mill
« on: January 02, 2006, 07:38:51 PM »
My first mill goes up today, !!!

I made mine using two bearings on the yaw, with a caster, (bearing) on the furl.

I scored a Mini test tower from brother-inlaw last weekend, !!! 7' tall, fold-up !!!

I'll post many pic's later.

Will run thru "FlexCharge", "NC25A/12", with Dump being portable heater, (120 VAC Converted).

My Furl and Yaw will show that I saw what others did and had to do it my way.

OK

I see that my caster bearing wheel furl mount needs tweeked.

It was sitting in full furl this morning. lol

I'll be leaning it back and or adding a spring or two, to get it to un-furl.

O-well, it's just a idea, to keep me from showing how little I remember about welding.

I just set-up the Ametek  mill again, with a spring to un-furl.

MAN that thing chases the wind gusts, maybe to much bearing on YAW.

I was watching and saw the tower pick-up a leg and quickly pulled it down again.

I'll reset it after I run the wires up thru tower tube, (was thinking about using extention cords, bolth wires for Pos & another using bolth wires for Neg. They are 16 Gauge rated @ 13 Amps. Will this be safe?)

I"ll also set the GUY lines this time.

I'm just in the middle of the "Controller Box" build and with the wind blowing had to play a little bit. lol! Have a trailer tail light on the mill for now, (when up).

I'll resize some pictures today and post.

Please vote in the poll !!!

Hey Coldspot    Yeah I used some caster berings on several motor conversion, mills. In every one of soner or later just a few weeks, they getting loose, and bucking like they had he-be-je-be's .Besides that they allways try to follow the wind to much. The prop didnt know if it was comeing or going.  So I quit useing them...and went back to just pipe in pipe.

You could possably use all 3 conductors of the extension cord for your positive side. and use your tower or pipe for the negative side.

And ,  How do you post a new poll question, I've searched the whole contents of the board looking for the correct way ?

Heck, I can't even find the polls to vote or read! I can, however, read comments to the polls via the "recent activity" page.

Cheers.

Ok, there is a box you need to check in "user preferences" and then it shows the main poll but only on the front page. Just got curious so checked it out.

It's at the bottom of the page when I make new entry.

MelTx-

Did you use them for "Furl"  or  For "Yaw"  ???

Woof-

These cords don't have the Three wires just two.

Imagion, trying to buy extention cords at dollar store around X-mas time, geezz. lol

lucky they had any, just indoor 9' ones, "Test" tower is just 9' anyway.

I'll be using some "jumper-cables" soldered together to go from tower bottom to battery bank.

C-Spot  I used the casters with bearings for yaw, tracking the wind.I didnt need to furl, they mostly had a least 4 or 6 blades. So there was no over speeding.I think you need some resistance to turning otherwise the alt keeps turning and opposing itself.

I am now trying a duel rotor with 6 blades, pipe in pipe.I am in a low wind area and cant raise a tower over 10 or 12 ft.So I am trying to make a more powerful alt,and have it cut in early.Heck who knows I might even get a grip, and figure a balance for all the issues that have to be considered.Keep trying and dont give up.

MelTx-

I only used a small caster for the furl.

For the YAW, I used two bearing that had a solid shaft running thru them.

I stuck it down a small pinch tube, and also used a old HD bearing for the shaft to sit on. I drilled two holes thru shaft for mounting the gen to.

Pictures will show.

Ready 4 furl

Trying to get 45`

After test night and found FROZEN in full furl, I'll be tilting this back about 25`

Was an easy match 4 blades after thin ring attached to only three points on hub broke off with 4' "Zub-Woof" blade attached to ring, (wasn't even flying, rolled off seat in truck after powersliding around corner on iced road, MAN I love only one thing about winter and thats slick streets, must mean I've been driving same truck to long)l

Elvin-

So sorry, ( about your slow conection)

But pic's are resized as per forum guidelines.

Cheap as- "AudioVox" DC400.

MP3 player, Voice recorded, Camera, Voice over Picture, Digital Camcorded.

About half size of pack of smokes, NO built-In flash, has taught me to hold very still and only takes pic's of Non-moving things unless in full Daylight. But I still need 2 remember to hold still. lol

One cool thing about this digi cam is that it's the only one I've ever used that dousn't act like a muzzleloader, (pull trigger then wait till goes off). LOL

This one takes pic as soon as button is pushed. Then you must wait about 3 sec's till you can take next one. Pretty cool "Toy", 4Meg, built-in rechargable bat, (removable),

"SD" mem cards, (came with 30 Meg), Upgraded to 128 @ $19.95, (two hundred twenty one highest quality pic's with the 128 card or half hour vid, need one or two of those 1 G cards) lol.

$140.00 USD well spent, I've spent less and gotten just that!lol.

OK

What would you people like the pic's to sized too??

I was just following forum guidelines!

When I resize them I can go any size.

And yes It will take crappy pictures but I'd rather not, heck look at them,

I can just get ok ones inside, (no built in flash).

CS;

You do understand the difference between display size and file size?

Most folks seem to get plenty of detail in files well under 100 kilobytes in size.

Just curious which "forum guidelines" you thought you were following?

This has been addressed literally dozens of times.

displaying the files as bmp will make them huge, open the file in paint, then "save as" jpeg/jpg, then it should be MUCH MUCH smaller with nearly same detail.

Hiker-

I removed them ALL!

I'm glad to hear about the .jpg VS .bmp

I've always saved mine files as .jpg

Don't know why "IrfanView" saved as .bmp  ?

now that I've learned something I'll make sure I only post .jpg

I think I can just open the folder and change all the pic's to .jpg

by typing over the .bmp

Anyway sorry, will remember now that somebody explaned it, (instead of just -iching about it).

After I learned this new good info I removed every pic posted here.

Might reload some.

If you resize them to even 25~50K each, there won't be much difference in quality.

I am on a faster than normal cable connection, and I thought the internet went down while downloading the pics. 10megs is a lot of download.

If you reload them with the same names, they will show up in the same places.

This is only 13kb.

Ghurd,

You can't let an opportunity pass by to show one of those gennies eh? :)

I'm even feeling like I'm starting to know your neighbourhood too...

Only thing missing is the neighbour whacking the blades in the middle of the night in the snow; why haven't you made a picture of that :)

OOP'S

Found setting in "IrfanView"

Now all are being saved as .jpg @ 10th the size, wow.

When paying attention a guy can learn something new everyday !!! LOL

I re-uploaded all the files and still not showing? same names? (Or maybe I didn't wait long enough, I have very quick connection, {these uploaded much quicker}).

I still have it pulled down for the wiring hookup and a couple tower mods.

Also finding out were girlfriend will let me place it, (must be in flower garden, lol)

Did get some more work done on "trim" blades I'm building, (salvaged some old trim and thought they looked a lot like nasa style profiles if I removed a little here and there). Will be used as a 6 blade about 2' each when done, (darn hand rasp is slow),lol.

This is probably was were I got the 640X480 "Forum Guidelines", (I start a new folder for any forums I surf at and include a sub folder labeled for the pic's I might post there with the size limit).

Anyway I'm just trying to include something and not just suck information.

Tail or Rudder size and length of setback?

How it looks now with tilt down on tail.

To much?

To little Tail?

To far back?

just a different pic on tail showing how far back and size.

Just seems to chase the wind around alot.

maybe to many YAW bearings?

I would guess the tail is too small and too long.

"chase the wind around alot"

Partly from the smooth yaw bearings?

Looks like you could have my problem. Too much turbulence.  Last night the one I posted above faced north and the LEDs light up, violently faced south and the LEDs light up, then north, then south...  The wind was from the west side of the house.  Amazing it didn't tear the blades off (securly fastened with a loop of duct tape!).
