Jacobs 1000w 1980's Windmill
« on: January 10, 2006, 05:27:21 AM »
I've got the chance to purchase an older Jacobs windmill locally here in Mi. Was wondering if any of you would have any idea of its value. It looks to be in pretty good condition and the lady said it has been turned on at least once a year since 2001 when it was last in production. Her dad was deep into this but passed away and I just stopped by and she took an interest in my discussion with her. She also, and her son too, mentioned that when Dad last painted it he had the blades refurbished and there was a slight vibration to the mill so they didn't put it to work. ???

It's a 1000W standing on a approx 55' lattice (very well built) homemade tower. Everything comes with it but no inverter only the controlers and she said the batteries may come with it but they're pretty old now and probably of no use ????

Hoping that someone may have an idea of value on this mill.

Thanks,

behoof

Do you know what voltage it is? Alot of those were 32 volt, making it hard to match up with todays batteries and inverters. But on the other hand they were one of the most well built, long lasting wind turbines of their time! Something like that here in Canada, depending on the tower would sell for 350-500 dollars at least.

Shadow, no I'm not sure of the Voltage but I'm sure gonna ask her when she calls me in the next couple of days. I had told my wife that I guess it would probably be around $500 or $600 give or take. The lady mentioned that she thought Wattage a $1 per was about the going rate, I agreed and we both agreed that since it was used and had an issue with out of balance or something she'd get back to me.

I'm gonna have to go see if I can find some sites on the web with info on these old mills. I definately need more info to see if this one is for me.

Although it is a really good looking setup, not at all a backyard looking job, very professionally done IMO.

Thanks for the quick reply I appreciate your input and will post whatever comes of this. If it's not for me perhaps someone on here will need it.

Well lucky you if you can get that for $500 you are laughing.

The old 32v Jacobs and the Australian made Dunlight were both very well built machines

testimoney to this is that many of both are still flying here and producing power.

In my book the 55ft tower is worth at least that by itself, given that you also get the

Jacobs controll panel all the guy wires and i have no doubt the power cables as well you have what we call in this country a "Bloody Bargain Mate".

Also i think that they had auto furling in the prop hubs i know the Dunlight did.

What state are you in if you decide you dont want it i will buy it for a friend of mine over there.

Whirlybird,

Yep, I agree with you IF I can get it for that price... heck, I'd take it at that price even if I don't use it myself.

But if it gets up over the $1500 mark I'm less inclined to get into it because it is older and I really don't want to get this to practice on, I need the power not the practice <smile>

I saw one, I think, on Ebay a little while back but I can't find the old auction now. I'd like to see if I could find what one of these actually sold for. This one is, by ground observation, in good shape but as I mentioned earlier, they tell me that it has a suttle vibration when it's spun up. They claim that it's always worked well and provided all the power they needed.

I'm just waiting for 'THE CALL' from her to get a handle on what it's gonna take to get this. She say's her one son has three mills running at his place. So I have to believe they are not going to come at me with a novice price.

We'll see though, will post info as I get it.

32V machines are quite compatable with 24v systems, just start charging a little earlier not that thats noticable.

wpowokal allan,

Thanks for the input and that's what I had in mind. I wasn't too concerned about it being 32V, if in fact it is?  The lady hasn't called me back as of yet so I'm still at square one but with a lot more info regarding this mill..

Thank you and regards,
