New Wind Turbine
« on: January 24, 2006, 06:24:03 PM »
I'm try something different on my new Wind Turbine. Instead of paint, all the metal parts are being rubber coated.

The alternator bracket and tail I used BodyPro rubberized undercoat.

Its coarser and leaves a little rougher finish.

But on the 2 magnet rotors I used 3M and its alot smoother, more like an orange peel finish.

I'll be using the 3M from now on. Probably even on the leading edge of my blades.

I've used this stuff on other things,(tractor drawbar, tractor battery compartment, etc) It takes a day or so to completely cure but once it does its VERY durable.A can costs 7.99,2 cans is lots to do a turbine.I may clear coat to give it a nice shine, havent decided yet.

Very neat/fancy looking Shadow!  Congrats...

I like the stator bracket!

I'd worry a little bit (not too much) about it getting hot on hot/sunny days.  Probably a non-issue though.

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

I generally use cold gal on the bare steel, then a couple coats of good oil paint.

But that rubber stuff ,I've used on the boat trailer and it's real good-I'll dig up a can of it and see how it goes

Yes, the heat issue crossed my mind, but up here in Canada we get 6 months of winter and 6 months of poor sledding. So I'm not too concerned, I'm hoping the black will keep ice and snow off.

Aren't you afraid that if you use rubber paint your volatage might bounce around. LOL.

Recoat the welds after a few weeks weathering and then again every spring; something on how heat changes metal & undercoating bond, I've had the welds bloom out before...
