Why is it nothing ever goes as planned?
« on: March 14, 2006, 08:56:44 PM »
Well, I got everything together and installed all the pieces, parts and components in place, and went to fire it all up.

Now first off, let me explain that I am EXTREMELY claustrophobic.  I am installing the heat exchanger part of this system in the crawlspace under my house.  Things do not bode well from the get go.......

Anyways, I get everything where it's supposed to be, all hooked up, fill it with water, and it springs a leak.  :(

Fix that leak, another one developes.

After fixing about 5 or 6 leaks, I fire up the pump.  Wife informs me there's a pretty rainbow outside near the stove.  I'm getting soaked under the house, and in general not in a very good mood at all.

Absolutely NONE of the pipe fittings will seal.  I've tried teflon tape, I've tried pipe dope, I even tried silicon sealer.  Nothing works.

I give up.  I've completely taken the water system apart 5 times now trying to get it to seal up and it just won't.  I have no idea why, my brother the plumber has no idea why, Ace Hardware have no idea.

I am frustrated to the point of tears with the amount of money, time, and effort spent on this stupid thing for it not to work like this.

Just thought I'd use you folks to vent on.  Please don't try to suggest ways to fix it as I have fully given up on the idea entirely and am scrapping the project.  Tomorrow morning I will be disassembling it (probably with the largest hammer I have supplemented by the Sawz-all) and throwing the whole works in some dark corner of my storage shed to be forgotten for several years......

Okay won't talk you out of it but "port 80" is wide open and I can see all of your kitty's pictures.

The beer fridge is pretty cool too.

Just thought you ought to know.

That's a bummer, but vent away!  I usually don't mind someone venting especially when it's not at me.

That looked like a neat little project.  Maybe the plumbing fairy will visit during the night... if not, have fun with that BFH in the morning!

hello Nanotech!!

you have to learn to laugh about it (its better than cryin if you have got to that point)

a good old saying "$#|+ HAPPENS"

just walk away from it for a while and procede at another time.

it's story time.  here is what i have been through since last summer.

i was erecting my 60 foot heavy duty tower. decided to hinge it at approx 25 feet, and crank up the rest. with top 1/2 hinge mounted, i winched up the rest of the tower in one piece. the hinge had a hard time to align. i used a pry bar!  cut the cable accidentaly. the tower started to fall and impaled me in the hip and then hung up on my safety belt. i was waving my arms all around in excrutiating pain as my back was cracking because it was bearing all the weight of the tower.  if not for the safety belt, it would have torn off the right side of my ass. my son climbed the tower and tied off the tower that was sticking in me then we cut the safety belt.  i still made it down the tower.

NEXT!

i finally got the tower hinged and got the 24 foot jin pole mounted up there and all into position.  i could even just lift the tower by pulling on the rope. something else went wrong AGAIN! the jin pole is 3 inch square tube (3/8 wall thickness) and super heavy. it swung down in a woosh and just missed my head. it then tore off 2 top rails of the swimming pool, 2 of the vertical legs, and tore out the bottom rail and sliced open the main tub.  well i got all that patched up.

NEXT!

decided it would be safer to hinge at close to ground level. got it all together complete with 3hp conversion and ten foot prop ready to fly.  got the tower cranked up 3/4 of the way and guess what?  "LOOK OUT-SHE'S COMMIN DOWN".  SMASHED IT ALL TO HELL.

even bent the shaft of the conversion like a banana.  i have since made a new 12 foot prop for it, and will likely convert a 5hp motor for it now. even got 2 sections of the tower up and then winter sets in.  should be back at it soon.

NEXT!

about six weeks ago i decided to do battle with a table saw and lost the end of my finger.  sadly, it was my favourite finger for picking my nose.  only good thing about this event was that the mice got to eat some hamburger (fine grind).

LOL!  it can only get better now ( i hope)  :)  gonna be an interesting year!

best thing i have learned to do is look back and hope the hell i don't repeat any of those feats.

i wish you better luck this year also and never ever give up.  :)

When I run into problems like that I find it's best to let it sit for a while before I do anything more to it. You don't want somthing simple to get the best of ya! After acouple of days or maybe a week, you will be calm not in a hury and things might change. If not oh well!

I'm thinking....if these are threaded pipe fittings ? Good pipe and pipe threads do not

leak! Pipe dope cleans the threads more than in

itself does any sealing...I read that somewhere!

But anyhow step back for awhile for a couple

of days and don't be so anxious fix one leak at

a time....you'll get it!

Fill 'er up and throw some Bars-leaks in. It will affect heat transfer a little. After it's run a while and leaks have subsided you can change fluid. Or if you're a real redneck use oatmeal. Nuttin worse than a quitter.

Really pipe dope and teflon tape are used to fill in any inperfections in the pipe thread not as a sealer,in fact if the threads were perfect you would not even have to use pipe dope or teflon. When I do work on heating system with threaded fittings I will use pipe dope and also a few wraps of candle wicking even strands fom a string mop will do the same thing. being a plumber I know there is only one good leak and that is after a couple of beers :-)

nanotech;

First thing, stop the sharing of any drives on your computer, turn ON the firewall that comes with XP. If you up graded to SP2 then is turned on by default. Get intouch with your hosting agent and give them this link "http://www.boomspeed.com/bofh1968/" and tell them the world is able to see those cute little kittens you have.

If you're using DSL you could telnet into your router and shut the sharing off or move all of the files to a passworded directory.

Most of the time this happens is when a hosting link is deleted even by accident.

Apache and many others attempt to fix the link on the fly and find it in the trash and since most trash bins are not password protected. Bingo! instant access.

It's an old hacker's Fidonet trick. But you should let your hosting agent know they are giving your stuff out to the world.

If they don't hurry someone will be messing up your computer really bad.

Currently Ihave the ability to copy, move, delete and add stuff.

I'm an honest person, but there are those out there who aren't.

Sorry I didn't get back sooner, moving 15 servers with Doc screaming at me that they can't get in even though they were told the last 3 days to move was coming can get a person down.

Let me know ehre and given the time I can help remotely.

Cheers!

Are you 100% sure?  As port 80 is definately closed on my computer, I have two different firewalls running, I'm behind two separate routers, and not even samspade.org can find my correct IP address.

Now, my hosting is another story.  It IS open to the public.  But ADMIN access is not.  The link you posted is indeed to my hosting service and has the files you mentioned.  And a lookie-loo now should give you a much different result than it did before.

I'm Still able to pull pics. I do want to know how you got pictures of our cats as kittens.

They sure are cute:-) The black and white one is just like our duaghters Rascal.

And just in case the host thinks I'm kidding. "http://www.boomspeed.com/bofh1968/allthree.jpg" I just pulled this through

The stove directory is fixed tho.

Just how high was the snow to get a picture of that imprompt to beer fridge any how?

That is awesome and maybe you could post it here in the diaries to have others know what I'm talking about.

Cheers

Black pepper added to the fluid as a sealant?  That works??!!??  How??  Does it not dissolve and so just clog the leak?

Black Pepper was the preferred method of sealing radiator leaks back in the day.  It won't plug big holes, but it will seal up pinholes in a heartbeat.

The only drawback is that it isn't a permanent fix.  You'll have to keep adding black pepper from time to time, whenever you see the water seeping out.

If that was my portal to the outside world I think I'd be a little claustrophobic also, not to mention the cabin fever.

Nice fridge nanotech, I hope the BFH didn't get used yet.  I sill think that's a neat project, maybe scrounge some copper up and sweat the joints?

Do you have an expansion tank in the system? Sounds like too much pressure as the water gets hot and expands trying to turn into steam.

Don't use BLACK PEPPER. It is a safety hazzard. Even though it will

fix your leak in the radiator, when driving down the road, you'll

start sneezing and this will cause temporary blindness. If you're

lucky, you will only hit small trees.
