0-500 AC or DC Volt meter found
« on: May 30, 2006, 05:23:28 PM »
This Volt meter I spotted last week in a old car bed,

el-cameno, or ranchero type car.

I just had to pick it up,

After blowing most the dust off of it

I thought I might have a pretty good find, :)

But after looking over the bottom side, I wonder if I'll ever get it to work????

I have only de-dusted it a bit so far and did try polishing the face a bit

and that did work, to help clean-up some of the yellowing-out the sun

rays did to it over the years.

The  front side conections I can understand just by looking

at them but, the three wires out the back I still haven't thought about much yet.

Just had to share the good luck I have been getting

So I hope you all are doing as well this spring with your "finds".!!!!!!! lol :) !

That's a collector not a user. Probably out of a bigger car diagnosis unit.

Considering Harbor freight tools will have DVMs for $2.99 on June 2, 3, 4.

I gave one of these meters to everybody in my family for Xmas, when $3.99, thought it was a great deal.

I don't have much use for an analog meter.

I have tried to sell some ~6" mirrored meters for $15 ea. No takers.

I converted an old VTVM from tubes years ago. Maybe you should do the same.?

Then came along lower cost DVM. Only use a VOM if I need more than 5 meters at once.

Think I will buy some more of the $2.99 meters, 5 should cover it for a while?

Have fun,

Scott.

VERY NICE unit.

Some of the best test equipment I've owned/used are/were tube based.

The VTOM's for the longest time were the only things that would acurately measure resistors in the low ranges and I still keep one around for pico-fuse testing.

The 3 back wires are for hooking up to what would've been a battery set for proper operation. Without some real up close looks at the wiring base , can't tell for positive ID.

The tubes don't normally go bad on these units, however the black tube type does look as if it's a solid state replacement for the tube that went there.

If you do a restore on it for use, be sure the test those inside wires, most old types used resistive wire for measurements, kinda like old radios used resistive wires inline with tubes to keep the elements heated.

Go find an old timer mechanic, he'll be able to tell you how to use/repair it.

Best of luck with it!

Cheers

Nice find coldspot!

Looks like nice conversation piece for the work bench.

If the meter movement still works and you would like to use it, put 2.5M ohm resistance inline with the meter and it will be a 50V full deflection meter.

I had an old Archer kit meter given to me that didn't work and after trial & error substituting that's what worked for me. I have a couple TDM mills in the yard that I've been toying with and needed a meter that didn't run on batteries so the analog meter was perfect. Ran a wire to the bedroom window and hooked it to the meter. When the wind blows I can see what mill is outputing.
