Sparky Update
« on: July 18, 2006, 10:53:59 PM »
The rotor;

 I needed to turn it until the cage was gone and the lams started separating{Zubbly warned me}so stopped and thought i could grind off the last 1/8th,no chance the least bit of heat from the grinder made them look pregnant.

 Now what do you do vawtman?

 Sparky you are now going to have 2 rotors to match the 1.5in L.mags.

 So i painstakingly removed each lam and got them to the needed diameter and thought why not make 2 rotors for the heck of it.He had 8 holes in the lams for cooling so bolting them together went well.

 Now the next problem creaps up.Oh forgot 3hp 3ph 4pl in the old days.12pl now i hope.

 When putting the mags on the rotors 1in diameter i think i might get cancellation on a skewed stator and am wondering if i could have 10 magnet poles with 12pl winding ?I remember Ed talking about this awhile back.

The stator;

 Is dual also and skewed 10 degrees in opposing directions.Also slightly staggered in an attempt to confuse slot ripple.

 My feeble attempt to eliminate cogging torque.CONFUSE THE HECK OUT OF HIM in other words, or me.

  Any thoughts guys

"The rotor;

 I needed to turn it until the cage was gone" ...... it was about here I got lost.

So I can't help you with this, but at least your not confused on your own.

Sorry Oz

 Should have stated aluminum.

 Confusion is fun isnt it?

 Now you got me confused old buddy

    Thanks and good luck with your boards.You speak of confusing I dont even have a clue what your up to.Thats the fun part of this board.

Your stator must be wound for the same number of poles as you have poles on the rotor.

You can wind the stator with strange numbers of coils to produce a distributed winding but it must have the same number of poles.

Cogging is purely an issue of the magnets and core slots, messing with the winding has no effect, it will cog with no coils. Stick to a winding that you can do and understand.

If you get cancellation, you skewed too much (with any 4 pole I ever did).

I have a feeling reverse skewing could have some issues. maybe making the cogging worse.

Some guys replace the seperated rotor lams with a solid steel bar. Thats past what I have to work with!

Some guys replace them with a stack of washers and epoxy or JBWeld.

(Square washers can be found near the rebar)

After playing with small narrow blades, I'm not nearly as concerned with cogging as I was. Stuff I thought would never turn in the wind, does.

Hi flux

 After further examination he will be ok at 12pl.on each stator.

 I was planning on using Zubblys wave winding on the stators.So he will have 36coils with 24 poles.

 With all your travels have you ever heard of someone trying this?

 Im wondering if ill have to skew at all with carefull mag placement.I guess ill just have tinker with it and see what happens.Its all in fun.Thanks

Thanks for your reply Ghurd

 My first thought was to use washers and solid steel would have been nice,but like you its past what i have to work with.The shaft is 1.5 id and would need 4in od.Not easy to find washers like that here.

 Has far has reverse skewing goes the 5hp 4pl has the same slight cog either way i turn it,But thats with the mags skewed on the rotor wouldnt think it makes a difference though.

 Have fun with your projects

 Flat washers are easy to make...steel strips

cut into squares then drill holes.
