Phoenix flys again
« on: August 26, 2006, 12:26:04 PM »
Well it took a while but we again raised the repaired Phoenix (duel rotor) today, now just waiting three days for wind.

Previous tale of wo is here..

http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2006/8/12/2956/23645

Wh had to cast a new magnetic rotor since the last one flew away.

And a new stator..

Since the failure was due to a blowen bridge and then stator retaining nut comming loose we were taking no chances. Spacers and lock nut are the order of the day, here is the new stator being fitted.

Blade reballancing, get on with it Grant!

Refitting and ops a crack is noticed in the mounting plate for the stub axel...

Oh well, fiels welding comming up..

Anchor setting up nothing like a heavy weight for this job...

Now lets just lift it a little to fit the blades on....

Final blade alighining...

Oh yes not to forget the supervisors Rex and Kelly

We know it will cut in a little later than previous but until the wind blows its a guess. The rectifiers were brought down to the base and  two 5 core cables run down the tower. We noted that after 12 months service there was no twisting up of the drop cables previously used. They were 16mm sq areal cable x 2, and we were able to pull the new cable through with one of them no problems.

And some of the tail was cut off to allow earlier furling. New helicopter tape was fitted to the leading edge tips of the blades, the only thing missing is go faster stripes.

Looks very good but it looks like some of the coating on the magnets has come off. Are they damaged in any way?

Angus, there was some damage, they were salvaged from the tripple rotor failure, best we had.

nice job indeed.

according to picture before last one, you have more wind towers around you than trees. what is more efficient  - trees with converting CO2 in 02 or generators decreasing polution in world :-) ?

just a small joke. pics are very interesting.

Allan,

Great to see that Phoenix has risen!

Just back from planting 5,000 trees and 1,400 still to go.

Keep in touch!
