First Try at a Generator, Part II
« on: August 26, 2006, 05:50:58 PM »
I wanted to put some more pics in with my first entry, but I forgot.  Here is a picture of the rotor with the magnets placed in the groove that I cut, and here is a photo of the hub/bearing assembly I found at the boneyard.

There really is no reason to post your story this way. Just go back to your first diary entry and post your new stuff as a reply to your original post. That way the story is more continous with comments as you go along. The mods will probably do it for you once he sees what you've done.

For all the work you're about to go through... you really should get lots bigger magnets on there!  Otherwise you're bound to be disapointed.

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

I agree with a post from the beginning of the story, ... use larger magnets. You'll might save some bucks by using these tiny ones for $13.00, but you'll be very dissappointed while testing (for power) this assembly later ... especially after everything is epoxied up ...

i think the releave you cut is too deep for that thickness of magnettake it back to the shop.

you could easily put 6 or 8 times as many magnet sets on those rotors. but you should probably get another set just to start.

Thanks, everyone!  I am looking around for larger magnets, it will have to wait until payday, though.  I hate being broke..LOL!  It is so great that I can draw upon the experience and wisdom of everyone here.  Thank you so much!

Yes, the magnets as shown are too far apart.  At the risk of having my head detached from my torso, I suggest he figure on a coil diameter twice that of the magnet with the coil center the same diameter as the magnet, which seems to be a pretty standard design.  Find out what magnets are available and which size allows the proper number of coils to just fit nicely around the rotor.  For instance, if he was doing a 18/24 design, those 18 coils need to fit nicely around the rotor with each one touching its neighbor.  Note that I didn't say anything about him trying my design.

Hello everyone,

In light of your opinions, I was wondering if there is something useful I could do with the magnets I already have.  I have 29 of the 1/2" x 1/8".  I would love to come up with something that can charge up my 18 volt battery for my power tools.  I live in a trailer park so I am limited to a VAWT and I still can't go too large.  Any ideas would be VERY GREATLY appreciated.

An induction motor conversion.

Not sure why you want to limit it to a VAWT. Small HAWTs can get very high speeds.

This 20" thing would work in a trailer park. Would take a total of 12 of those magnets.

It would work better with these 24" diameter RichH blades.

 You get the idea.
