Wind Took Me Out
« on: November 16, 2006, 05:00:31 PM »
Last night was a sad night and with over 100km gail force winds for hours on end took out all my turbines. The 2 foot and 4 foot Lenz all gone. With my VAWT the blades broke off and don't know other damage yet. Good news the towers are still up. One that didn't go down was servo motor and was peeking over 5 amps, never seen this high before. Not feeling to good with all work gone. My solor array stand broke and think panels might be okay. Some lost there roof tops and cars blown off roads. Was a night to never forget and will rebuild again.

Bad Night

Sorry to hear about your losses :-( Don't you just hate mother nature. I hope you get your rebuilds as good as your lost ones.

Sorry for your loss.  I saw the nasty weather that hit the west coast - almost got caught in it, too, but I flew back to Calgary a day ahead, whew!

Hey Steven

You are in the same place Calgary, I live west of Millarville where we got hit real hard. Any place south and west got it. All the years never seen wind like this. One funny things my kids saw our barn cat fly. Lucky we got her and locked her in. I think on the VAWT a tree branch hit one blade and broke, then all off balance, I heard a turn  buckle snap, then the rest came off. Will check further on daylight/ weekend. There was no weather warnings or I would of done things different. Live and learn. I hope yours survived.

Wayne, we live north west of Edmonton, thought mine were coming apart also last night. I don't think we got it as bad though.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, here in southern Sask the last two days have been 60 to 80 km winds. We must be getting the leftovers of your storm.I'm taking advantage of it though, we are building a wood basement and today we ran power tools the whole day and never lowered the battery bank at all. I think the power saw was just a dump load today. Its kinda neat to be able to be building using only wind as a power source and look up and see the wind turbine locked in the furled position. So no doubt you'll rebuild better than ever and be going again soon.Good Luck.

My old ones have been down for a while, and my new ones aren't finished yet, so I didn't have to worry.

Lights are still out in Bragg Creek, how about yours?  Ironic that the time you need the backup power is the event that wrecks the back-up system!  That's nature for you.

We have power from the grid now and didn't for awhile. Can't believe Bragg Cr still out. Just lucky mother nature never blew in -40 stuff behind it. I can run my furnace motor off inverter for a short time, but thinking must have small 220 gen to run well and charge batterys just in case. Was a big learning lesson. We do store big water bottles just in case. I have alot trees down and fences my work is cut out for weekend.
