Wind
« on: November 22, 2006, 12:04:24 AM »

Almost no wind today, so put up the next try.  Another GM alt,

with the big Neo in it, but different windings, and a larger size.

This one put out 39 volts @ 300 rpm, open circuit.

A half inch differnce in rotor diam seems to make about 10

volt difference.  (same number of winds, same size wire, same Neo)  Just

checked, 5/8 ths inch difference.

Hopefully have the cable wrapping problem solved.  (thanks to Ghurd)

Anyway, will post when the wind comes up.

I know most of you would prefer to build from the ground up, and

I must say your results are great.  I am sticking to the GM's mostly

as a cost saving measure.  I have literally hundreds of these things,

and the time.

Dr.D--will post pics when I figre out how to remain in the

limits.  Damn camera takes wonderful shots, but huge files.

   Sorry, and thanks.

Use something like irfanview (download for free from net) and load your image. Under image click on resize/resample and select the 640 size. Save the reduced image and check it for size before posting. Works great, costs a little download time, and keeps the cookie monster from deleting your pictures.  A small picture is still worth 500 words.

bj,

it might be a dead end but have you concidered using the output of your modified alternator to power up a second one .

i would think the second one would need a rewound stator as well.

Electron--hope you don't mind the short version.  Yes, I have thought about that for a few days,  (Hint from someone on this board)  Will try,

and post the results.  Have a bunch of rewinds, from experiments, and

have several pairs of identical winds.  Also have two identical rotors.

I am pretty sure that this won't work on A.C., but it stands a chance

on D.C..  Full wave bridge should help as well, which, at the moment

all of mine are.  (thinking of changing, with rect. @ Batts.)

Hard to say, but might be an answer to getting the voltage up, going

to smaller wire, etc.

Till then, thanks for the interest.

As promised, I tried two P.M's in series.  Readings were at first

double, as expected.  After about two minutes, lost about 20% voltage.

This was an open circuit test.  No load.  Investigation showed up a

blown diode.  These are stock G.M. diodes, and I have had several

failures before.  So, am not sure if the failure is due to series

hookup, or just crap parts.  Seems that the flaw in using these

things as a base is the parts available. (quality)

Having said that, upon rebuild, I will post again.

   Thanks for your interest.
