Magnet Plates Together
« on: January 13, 2007, 09:25:05 PM »
The magnet plates come out well enough.

This in the inside plate that attaches directly to the hub.

A lesson learned here was making sure to have the "timing" marks and magnet jig properly oriented before you glue the magnets down.  I placed the magnets on the wrong side of this plate, which was confusing for a little bit during a test assembly of the magnets on the hub.

Some of my wife's nail polish remover helped in removing the magnets that were already glued on with super glue.

Here is the Outside Magnet plate. I haven't cast these plates in resin yet.

Yet another lesson learned here is that 3 jack bolts are just not enought to keep things in good alignment on this hub.

Here my daughter was stacking some 1/2" nuts on top of the Magnet Plate's mould.

The lid is a piece of 1/2" plywood.

Reading all the warnings in several different places is just not enough to realize the real power of these magnets. It's like not really knowing just how big a mountain is until you are standing at the base of it..

I'm probably going to use vinyl ester resin on these plates, but I need to purchase more before I can finish.

Hi Wil

 Nice work

Just wondering does Hughs book state that one uses superglue for the initial attachment of the mags.

 See your having a blast.

I don't think Hugh's book does say to use super glue.  Sometimes the stuff I have read about on this forum and the stuff in Hugh's plans kind-of blend together.

But either way it's a good idea if you want to try out the alternator or some test coils before the casting process.

Hi Pepa,

No I didnt use stainless steel hardware in this picture.

It would be good advise to use stainless steel hardware whenever you are doing anything with these mangents.

I do have stainless steel hardware now.
