New 90Ah SLA Battery
« on: January 23, 2007, 07:15:23 PM »
I just got my new 90Ah SLA battery for my solar system. I didn't realise how heavy 28KG actually was! Here it is on charge. As you can see its at 13.83v on a 13.8v regulated charger. Ill leave it like this overnight to make sure it gets a good absorbsion charge.

This battery could make like difficult for my setup since 0.9Ah (1% total Ah) will be lost as self discharge every day. My solar is struggling to keep up with even that at the moment. Today they got covered in snow so I got nothing at all. Since they're laying flat it doesnt slide off.

My new charge controller is on the way too.

More info will be available on my website soon.

28kg?  What sort of sissy girl's-blouse of a battery is that? ;-)

Mine are big-ish, each cell is 2V 500Ah and weighs about 45kg:

I've seen some rather groovy looking ones at the scrapyard that were also 2V cells, but they weighed 200kg(!) each.  They were offering free delivery, but you had to have a site prepared with forklift access. ;-)

Only 90AH?

Really, it seems like a reasonable match to what is available for charging.

I use 1%/day for the calculator, but SLA's are a lot less.

I set up a retail bulk food store with about the same battery and solar power.

It runs the converted 12V cash register, inverter powered credit card machine (not often), and 7806 supplied FDA scale.

Sometimes the fire / motion alarm too.  I mean if it was not illegal to have the fire alarm clips on the battery.

(Though a fire alarm is NOT required, it is totally illegal here to use a non UL alarm.  The building inspector made the shopkeeper disconnect it.  Nothing is better than something?) End Rant.

No problems at all in a <0.5H/D worst case insolation, and guessing 5~6 years since the install.

So you CAN expect some use with the system!

I agree, it needs something.  Those fibreglass blades were built down to a price, and, to be blunt, suck.

I'll have to make a new hub to bolt onto the tapered shaft first, though.

What sort of self discharge do you think an SLA has then? If its not 1%?

Brilliant... Just discovered a crack on the underside of the battery from which the acid/gell substance has been slowly leaking onto my carpet. Ive sent a message to the eBay seller I got it from in the hope he will replace it. Its obvious impact damage. Its hit something small and blunt with some force.

A Lot Less, usually.  This is the best I can say...

I have about a dozen Yuasa 17AH SLAs that sat for 4 summer months after a 13.7V charge, and they read 12.4~12.5V.  Topped them off about 5 months ago, and now the ones on top are 12.1V after being in an unheated area. (Glad you asked!  Gotta do something about that.)

The 7AH don't usually seem to hold that well, but I have 5 Discover, year old never used that were topped off to 13.7V about 5~6 weeks ago. Now 3 read 12.57, one is 12.58 and one reads 12.82V.  I checked them 3 times. No idea why the 1 is at 12.82V.

They all are at -6C degrees.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about the crack, did you get any response from the seller.  I can offer you some SLA at a very good price?  Wish you the best of luck

Yes the seller is going to replace it. Since it was damaged by the courier he will claim on the insurance of the postage, with the help from the pictures I sent him. I should have the new one by Tuesday next week hopefully. I need it by then since my grandad and I are starting the box to hold the battery and we need it to size it up properly.

Hi,

Yes, thanks for the warning.  I'm probably about to add a 100Ah to my system.  I'll prepare myself for the weight...  Rather like the couple of bags of coal I did my back in with as a teenager I think.

Rgds

PS. Hope your long coach journey went OK!
