Coil winding base...
« on: April 15, 2007, 04:46:59 AM »
I have a couple hand winders that have literly wound 200 miles of wire on them.  You can tell by the stacks of empty spools laying around it.  I decided it was time to build something a little more sturdy although I'll still continue winding the small wire on the old one just to see how many miles I can get out of her...

Here's a shot of the winder...

And some shots of the coils I've been doing with it...

It works great !... no automatic counter on it yet, I'm still using my fingers and toes.  I made up a couple of them before I decided on this size.  It stands about 7" tall, 2" wide and about 4.5" deep.  I can clamp it to the table at night and watch TV while widing a batch of coils.

Just one of a dozen projects I'm working on...

Nice job!

Looks very professional.

I used a Tally counter on my jig. Put a cam lobe on the back plate to actuate the lever. Crude, but it works.

Looks like you could mount one on the A frame and use the bottom of the T plate to actuate it.

Got mine at the local sporting goods store...$10.

I have the same counter on my wooden winder and have been tossing around different ways to mount it.  Also looking at some of the geared units which would be quite easy to mount.

  Does the fun ever end???

That is a great looking winder Ed.

Looking at the last photo it's easy to see those slots in the plates. Is that so the bolts can be adjusted in and out as needed for different sized coils easy. Looks like it to me from here. Great design.

A quick thought, since there are 3 plates there, if you put a PVC spacer over the nut for the back plate does it wind two coils at once?

Real nice Ed. Excellent Craftsmanship. I like the sleeves the wire wraps on, no danger of damage to the coating!

$1 counter

A $1 real large display dual powered Calculator

from DollarTree works just as well...

( pressing + and 1, each time you press the

equal button, increments the total by 1)

Goes off after 8 to 10 minutes...so as long as

you don't take long breaks while winding a coil....

              Watching the counter and thinking

of that $9 you saved is half the fun! LOL

Another way to use them is to mount a magnet on the winder and solder in a reed switch on the = button to do it automatically.
