Wind Turbine PDF
« on: May 06, 2007, 03:12:59 PM »
Intro says it all:

http://www.osti.gov/bridge/purl.cover.jsp?purl=887056-i5WS5T

This is not a design for homebuilding but they review a lot of the problems faced by 'homebuilders' and there is information on a 100' tower.

Ron,

Thanks for posting that link.  A few facts from the report, which may provoke discussion or comparison with home built turbines:

Diameter 23 feet

Synchronous speed 150 RPM

Rated Power 6 kW

Start up TSR at 4m/sec wind: about 14

TSR at cut-out 25m/sec wind: about 2

TSR at 8 m/sec average wind: about 7

Solidity at root = 17%

Solidity at tip = 6%

Approximate total solidity = 10%

Tower height = 100 feet above ground

Thrust design load = 575 Lb

Turbine weight design load = 1600 Lb

Resultant Moment = 39,000 in-Lb

Total Top deflection = 12 inches

No one believes the theory except the one who developed it. Everyone believes the experiment except the one who ran it.
