4hp motor

found this at a liqudation store 17bucks..

single phase 220v-12.5amps..

havent cracked it open yet..

 any idea on the number of poles?

 would just like to keep it stock for now--maybe hook it up to a pedgen :}..

If you've got an RPM rating that might hint at the number of poles.  3450 RPM = 2 pole, 1820 = 4 pole.  Assuming it's for 60 HZ.  That's my guess, which may be flawed.

Are you sure that this is a 4 HP motor.

It look like a 3 HP to me.

Is there a PLATE/Serial Number or other identifying mark on this motor.

3400 rpm--60hz.. single phase..12.5amps

quick look inside showed some big wire coils[maybe #17wire]looks to be a 2 pole,,

has a couple of capastors in that black box..

did a google search---didnt find much on two pole motors--what i did find out was they don"t make very good wind turbines being that they have a high cut in speed..

hmm--maybe rewire for 3 phase!   when i find some time ile play around with it......

any ideas on a rewire hook up--number of poles ?

just a update...

 hooked up the motor to my ped gen[no mags on motor-just the caps]--hooked it up to a 75watt light bulb 110v..

 cranked the motor over till it kick in--you can feel it load up..turned the light on

 my meter was reading 100v - but i dont think that was the right reading  because

the bulb did not seem to be as bright as it should have been.did not really feel a big diffrance in drag on the pedgen with light on--tried a 110v 1875watt hair dryer

next--had the setting on low--surprized me it put out some good heat--still not running at the speed it should have been thou..next i tried a 12v batt. charger

shorted a piece of wire on the clamps--meter on batt charger hit close to 30 amps a few times- then the wire burned out..

you cant have a load on the motor when you go to start it --only after it kicks in can you add a load..well anyway it surprized me the power it put out with no mags.

not sure how long the caps would last if i ran it as a wind gen..[250v-50/60hrz]

not sure what speed it would kick in-it would free wheel till it reached cut in speed.dont really have to pedal that fast to reach cut in speed..tried to upload  a clip of the motor when it was frying some wire--to dam big 16mb..ile try to find a lower setting on my camera............later

 You seem to have a perfect testbed there.

 It shouldnt start generating until its about 10 percent over its rated speed(i think)

 If you could calculate the speed of your flywheel then you could translate that to the motor speed guesstamating your around 1:10 with your setup.20in flywheel and 2in pulley.

 So i guess at 260rpms pedaling your getting there.If you rewind 4pl you would need to pedal half the speed.

 3ph motors are better for this from what ive read.
