Radial vs Axial
« on: August 18, 2007, 01:18:51 AM »
The axial would have 10 mags at a smaller diameter and the radial would have 20 mags at a larger diameter with more coils.

Both would be cogless but the radial would have the same airgap with back iron of wire.

 Who would win?

i was wondering about this last year in a post entitled "vawt geni theory"

http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2006/6/11/1896/64818

nando and danb went on about something else

ed seemed to think that everything would be the same while flux thought there might me an increase in voltage.

vawtman, I would say, the 20 mag radial would be the clear winner with 5 coils/phase (3 phase), or 3 coils/phase (5 phase), where as the 10 mag axial doesn't have enough mags for the 3:4 ratio needed for 3 phase.

vman,

i'm in the same boat as you!

the main advantage i see to the radial design is that it's easy to form overlaping coils.

that gives twice as much energy per revolution.

if you put the wire(iron backing) right behind the coils and can get a good flux return path ,one air gap will be eliminated.

i came to the conclusion that for me a two phase(two single overlapped phases) design would be best.

Edad

Ive decided to make a small version of the wheel and turbine to get a handle on the design for the stator.I had the mags from another project anyway.Thinkin 20pl 40cl.

if i recall correctly you are planing on using the energy you harvest for heating.

that's what i want to do as well.

everything i've read about it says you need to run a higher voltage  to be efficient.

using all the poles per phase, like you are talking about, should give you that.

because you are using 20 coils to get the voltage you want, it should be possible to use a heavier conductor and reduce the resistance.

i think its a good idea to use the mags you have for this smaller one.

i can tell you one thing from experience .

they sure don't make much  power sitting on the shelf.!!

lol

i've been thinking about your rotor idea

it might be expecting too much to get a enough juice  to be a heat source from

this proto type.

perhaps just go for 12 volts at this stage .

im interested in your construction methods and how

you will control the postition and clearance of the stator.

Edad, ya i know it wont do much.Just want to try it on a small scale.

I was all hyped with seeley designed stator and still think it might be good with improvements in the back iron.

Just want to let you know im not crazy.

When i get done with the new little guy will update.
