350MW wood-chip electricity generator for Wales
« on: November 21, 2007, 08:22:27 PM »
See the non-tech summary:

http://www.prenergypower.com/nontechnicalsummary.html

and the BBC news story:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales/south_west/7105124.stm

Given the tidal barrage proposal also on the Welsh coast (17TWh/year), Wales might go carbon negative for electricity!

wouldnt the south west land some of the energy from the tidal barrage.  Good grid connection on both sides.  Interesting project.

We have a wood chip plant here in Middlesbrough. Not sure of its rating but I can tell you now, the day they fired it up you could barely see because of the smoke! Now its fully functional it works without much pollution.

Hi,

In the SDC plan, power would almost certainly be landed on both sides of the Severn, ie in Wales near Cardiff and in England near Hinkley Point, where there is already good grid connectivity.

The (intermittent) generated energy really would have to be distributed across the whole of the UK since Wales alone probably doesn't have enough generation that it could turn off to accommodate the great wash of electricity as the tide moves through the barrage!

Hi Damon,

With the SDC plan will the current proposal be ebb, flow or two way generation?  They can generate more power from ebb or flow but two way generation will like you say be more practical for integration into the grid.

Am getting a bit of this diary.

Hi,

Purely ebb as I recall, with 'flood pumping' to increase the total energy harvested.

Here's the full report:

http://www.sd-commission.org.uk/pages/tidal.html

Well worth reading, I think, as very thorough and rounded.

See my original dairy entry:

You have to get a real look at the prosses .The mass has to be gassified to be clean .

One of the best things about biomass is the opportunity to do spectral analysis to the

bulk as it's processed to look for problems . Record the region it came from  for a lead on local and regional problems .

Hi,

I asked how much of the equivalent energy generation of the plant would go in things such as cultivation and transport of the wood.

I just got a reply including the following:

"... the biggest carbon cost is in transport of the wood chip.

We calculate that approx 3% of the carbon carried in the vessel is used

in transport."
