mercury thermostats
« on: December 01, 2007, 02:44:01 AM »
I had to go to the local Dump for my work last Tuesday, (I was shocked that they sent me, they know I'm a "Stop for Stuff" type,. ?)

 I was very good and didn't get very far from my truck but, being in the "wood only" area and that I saw a kids scooter laying there that had much larger wheels than any other I'd ever seen, (12") I just had to get it.(Schwinn, "YO", Deluxe scooter){mid 80's}

While walking back towards truck I spotted an electrical cord so I grabbed it and it was hooked to a small board hinged to another board. Upon turning them over I found what must have been an automatic heating system for a small Dog House. This cord ran into a junction box and then to a light fixture mounted out from the wall with a metal back plate.

Also this had a mercury thermostat controlling the light. Wasn't beat up to bad but was bent a bit. And has no cover. I pulled the bent down parts out a ways.

I tested it yesterday and the temp coil worked but the coil with the mercury bulbs wires didn't let it make contact with the contact. No big deal I'll replace them.

I was thinking that this could be used for DC as well as AC.(wish I had a dozen of them)

Anyway, great find for parts, mercury thermostat, light fixture and junction box,,.. ect, ect.

I wonder if the admins would make a "Dumpster Diving" section ?

Would be a nice place to post pics of the latest footpath motor

rescue, or work place battery bank score. A diary is nice but a

section on converting waste items to RE is just shiny :)

I just built my new battery rack from brand new bed frames thrown

into the skip bin. Saved me a fortune in premium steel. (I'll hang

back on posting that project pending admin decision.)

After all, reuse is better than recycle.

sPuDd-

Down under, Thats funny, The area I live in, (S.E. Idaho, USA), Famous for spuds,(Potatoes, Like the "Russet"). LOL!!!   :)

Yes reuse is better.

"bed frames", For the battery rack, thats a great idea, I've been saving frame rails for tower stock but will probably just go with a tip up not a free standing. Free standing would be nice without guy lines but a tip up could get me up a LOT higher and thats the goal.

The "Dog House Heater" I found has more to it than first meets the eye. I took the cover off the "junction box" today, only to find that it wasn't a junction box but a housing for a circuit of some sort,,.. ??????

I haven't had a chance to give it a good look over yet but maybe tomorrow.

 :)
