Updates on my 12' turbine.
« on: December 06, 2007, 02:34:54 AM »
This Summer - fall - Winter I worked quite a bit on my tail. After  several times of up and down with the tower I ended up with the eight foot long angle irons cut down to six foot. I moved the plywood tail to seven foot, so I still have some length to it. I cut the bottom hinge off and moved it 1/2" to make it more straight up and down. I raised it last week with four inches of snow on the ground. I had to snow blow the back yard so I could use my van to raise it. We have had some good wind and the tail furls most of the time between 30 - 40 amps. The chain that holds it in it's normal position is slack at most of the time around 20 amps. With all the trees around the turbulence makes it furl different with different gales of wind. I still seen it once hit 60 amps but I think it is the way the wind hits it that it didn't want to furl. With all the turbulence it folds up and unfolds a lot. It doesn't stay furled long because my wind comes in waves. I don't like how it sits on the tower. It's not balanced. The center of gravity isn't where the yaw bearing is. It is closer to the tail side. I think it would work better if the machine sat balanced at the yaw bearing, but it works a lot better than it did before.

I took off my nose cone last spring and didn't put it back on till last week. I wanted to see the difference. Mostly because of rotor noise. I did notice a big difference in the start up and stopping. with the cone off it would come to a stop quite often, and in very little wind it would spin slower. With the cone on it rarely ever stops and will spin faster when there seems to be no wind. I still don't think it contributes much to power but it is nice to have the blades spinning when the wind comes, and to have it accelerate a bit faster too.

From a previous post on the board about the bicycle computer I decided to get one for myself. While I had all my wires out of the tower for twist inspection I added speaker wire, and a steel cable to hang the wires with. The speaker wire hooks to a sensor that runs the bicycle computer. I put the magnet for the sensor at 10" from center in the root of the blade. This worked good because I could hook the other side of the sensor up directly to a 5/8" double nut on the stator bracket. No extra hardware was needed other than the extra nut. I found that it worked with 260' of wire and extension cords hooked to it. So now I have the computer in the garage by the controls and gages.

I also sanded the outer layer of glass off my magnet rotors. I could see water around the surface of the magnets and the glass was bubbling a bit. I painted them up and closed the air gap up to 11/16". I was at about 3/4". It slowed the rotor down quite a bit.

This is when I can see the needle start to move on the amp gage.

The last picture reads mph on top at a 20" dia. The bottom reads 130 rpm.

Interesting to read that the cycle computer will work over that distance, I'd consisdered one of these for an anemometer but was worried that 75' might upset it.

I too have a difference by fitting a nose cone (see last diary), and like you I found that I now have more spin in less wind.  I read somewhere that the reverse is usually the case.  I fitted the 'boss' on mine to keep the water out and tidy it up a little.  I'm wondering now about adding something more aerodynamic, to see what happens.

My nosecone is blunt on the leading edge. I can hear a swishing of the blades when the wind isn't that strong so I took it off to see if it was the nosecone. It still made the noise without it. Then I discovered the performance difference.

I was trying to post more pictures last night to finnish this posting but I was locked out for posting to many pictures. I can't figure out how to ad pictures to a story other than to coment back to it. Then I was having trouble because I could only get one picture per coment in.

This was my max mph on the bottom. The top shows the current mph. I was getting into light and variable winds like the night before so it's slowing down. It was windy the day I reset it, but again I reset it at sun down when it was starting to calm down. Before I reset it The top speed was 23.6 mph @ what I think was 314 rpm in what I am guessing was 30 mph wind. If I did my math right you can multiply any of the mph or miles traveled by 6.56 and get the mph of the tips. The sensor is at 20". This way you can tell the tsr. The last picture with the highest value figures out to just over a tsr of five. I am not sure of the wind speed though. I am just guessing from what the weather said.   es/4094/max_mph" width=80%>

JMK:

Could you share some information about the bike computer?  Manufacturer? Model? and does it have Cadence capability?

Thanks!

It doesn't need cadence.  Not sure cadence would even work very fast.

Can do it with a $10 unit.

I see they have them for $1.00 US now. Shipping is $4?? from Hong Kong. I just baught one from the $1.00 listing. I am going to try to hook one up next to sit by the cumputer. My controls are straight threw the wall in the garage. I am going to try to plug a three way on the end of the cord then plug both into the three way. If you search bicycle computer on e-bay it is at the top of the list.

Does anyone know what (SETTING THE LAST VALUE OF ODOMETER) meens? or does? I tried to set it but couldn't tell what I was doing. Setting this cumputer is confusing.

I can't find a name, but here is where I got it from.

I also hooked mine up so the sensor was 90 deg to the way they show it. This way I could clamp it straight to the stator nut on the mount. I have about 1/16" air gap between the sensor and the magnet. Any bike computer will probably work, but it might be important to get one that you can adjust to the wheel size. This one just happens to be cheep!

Are you saying the instruction manual for a 99 cent Hong Kong computer is poorly written?  LOL.

It probably resets the miles back to 0.
