Moose problems at Otherpower HQ

Our neighbors Tom and Mary (they are building the second 20-foot wind turbine at our shop right now) found this bull moose tangled up in their neighbor's hammock yesterday. Don't leave your hammocks out for the winter in moose country!









They called the State Division of Wildlife, but their nearest officer was hours away, so they gave them some ideas for how to safely cut it loose. The first cut worked--but now the moose was still stuck, and now had a 6-foot radius in which to move. He charged everyone in sight, and the DOW advised to wait until morning to try again. You can see the circle he trampled overnight in the pictures.









Fortunately, over night the moose wrapped most of the hammock around the tree, and couldn't charge. At 4:30AM Tom drove his tractor down to the moose and parked it. He waited a couple hours for the moose to stop panicking, then used the tractor bucket as a shield while cutting the rest of the hammock with a hatchet.

 Guess no one ever showed Mr Moose the proper way to enter a hammock. Of course with no opposing thumbs- er--well, nevermind.

The last part of the video was a bit shaky

If they had used two cars or trucks to box the moose in (one on each side of the moose) then they could have cut it loose without it being able to directly attack its rescuer ? Not sure, never dealt with mooses myself. I've got plenty of trouble just catching escaped bunnies named 'Pluisje'.

They must have a full freezer, as all I could think was 'free meat, no hunting required'

There's an old Scottish comedy act of which the signature line to an Englishman's ears is:

"There's a moose loose aboot the hoose!"

(There's a mouse loose about the house!)

which this is uncannily like.

And yes, the obvious solution is to have left up proper instructions for the moose to have read so it could work out proper hammock/moose interaction scenarios.

(My farmer aunt once had a ram escape and fall in the swimming pool: a one-deep layer of soggy turds soon covered the water, like a lumpy oil slick!  And the slowly-sinking ram was no happier that the moose, though a little less dangerous, when we hauled him out.)

Hammocks are dangerous!  

If they don't have instructions, they should have some kind of warning labels.

Caution: Do not operate while under antlers.  Wear safety glasses.

I've seen a moose total a car that honked at it during the rut.  I sure wouldn't volunteer my vehicle to act as a barrier to a pissed off bull.

The person with the camera was moving faster that the moose when the moose got loose .I can't imagine the moose was really  going to take a nap in the hammock . I like moose

there's moose steaks, moose sausage ,and my favorite moose stew .I think I would have been  contemplating moose stew the whole time.

My first thoughts were:

Moose tenderloin and the lethality of a .44 magnum 240 grain jacketed hollow points on a beast of that size at 10 feet. But then I am one of those type that gets out and grabs his own meat regularly. And not from a shelf in saran wrap, either.

Couldn't understand how I was the only one considering that as a viable option.

 I would have filled the freezers up too. Um moose! I think I will put up a hammock. A big whitetail buck would be nice. I would rather have elk or moose, but they are a couple hundred miles away from me. They could have mounted the head and had a place to hang the hammock up for the winter.

 I have a couple hammocks riding around in my "Hunting Pack" for over ten years that now finally, I know what use them for! LOL!

Thats more along the lines of a safe way.

 I stood frozen still, afraid to move or take full breaths, armed with a loaded high power hunting rifle, behind a tree smaller around that the pipe I want my turbines up on! While three Bulls that would have had that little guy scared off, were bashing horns/heads less than 20 yards away!

 They finally wandered off without seeing me. I wished I'd had a video camera, lucky I wasn't the only one trying to hide behind that little tree or people wouldn't have belived us.

One evening, last week, the wife and I were on the way home. Darkness had just fell,

and it was cold. The rural, winding road was plowed, but snow packed and I was driving slowly. We came across 2 moose standing in the ditch and continued on for another 10 miles. Another two moose were standing in the middle of the road. I stopped a safe distance away and waited for them to go into the woods. They didn't. They were eating salt off the road and basically ignored us. After about 5 minutes, I blew the horn. No response. I waited for awhile and blew again while revving my engine. I got a stupid glance this time. I decided to move a little closer and blow again. Finally, after 20 minutes, they strolled into the ditch. I quickly moved past them. One was a huge cow and the other was a bit smaller. Maybe a 2 year old. The conditions were ideal for " Moose on the road" Snow packed, Cold, salted road, isolated area and stupid animals that have no fear.

     I am not a lover of wild game, but will admit that the best stew that I have ever tasted, was Moose.

  Kinda nice to go to the freezer, reach down in and pull up some homemade bambie's moma sage-spiced sausage isn't it:-}

and tenderloin? oh my yummy. Little Vinegar based basting sauce, little cummin to add just a touch of heat and we're set:-)
