New Toy 3 months in the Making

It Has been 3 mouths in the Making and finally its in the wind.

I started making a wind mill as a Toy for something to do something

to play with to keep my mind occupied.

I started reading web site after web site and then reading that same

web site over again. Trying to find information about how to Build the

home brew wind mill. Not only Reading But Then I started to Look for things

i could use to make this thing Fly. Things just around the house Wood,Metal,Pipe,

Old Tractor parts.

Then it started to Get bad, As I was driving Back And forth to work or

anywhere as far as that go's I was on the look out for STUFF.

Letting Friends, Family and Co-workers Know what i was doing and if they

knew of any place i could find Stuff. One Co-worker came up with an old

DC motor 90 vdc Daton. (free). My dad found a Aluminum plate 1/2 thick

Great for mounting the Motor on and making a disk and hub to mount

the Blades (free).Someone else had an old Road sigh great for the Tail.(free)

I Got it Now (WIND MILL ON THE BRAIN).

I found some old 4" pvc pipe at the house for the blades. Now i was set

every day after work down to basement i would go Reading and trying different

things just to get this thing working.

4" Pvc 24" Blades worked okay BUT I needed to go Bigger. So I went with 6" Pvc

blades, pvc at the time seem to be the easyest to make. The 6" Pvc 30" Blades

worked Okay But still not what i was looking for. Starting Looking into wood

Blades and how to make them. Seam like alot of work and a real pain to do

till i got started.Yes there is a lot of trial and error.The first wood blades

worked very well 1"x6"x30" long. Now i got it together and made up a test

stand out of some iron pipe and a 4x4 post to set it on. I can take it outside

now and test it after waiting 6 days for wind (it works).

Hooked up a 12 volt flash light bulb to it and it lite yeha. But that put a

big load on the motor and stalled it out(Fast). So i thought i would let it

out to see how the blades held up. That day i was at work and we got up to

50 mph winds Thats all i could think of windmill windmill windmill.

Interesting project, thank you for sharing!

I removed your picture though...  you should resize and repost it, it was almost 1mb in size, the limit here is 150kb.  Folks with dial up connections were complaining.

Free wheeling is not good for sure.  Also - not furling didn't help.

Another thing I notice is the way its mounted to the post there...  threaded pipe like that has about half its wall thickness at the bottom of the threads(a bit more or less depending on the size of pipe) and about 1/4 the strength it would have had it not been threaded.  You might be lucky the pipe didn't snap off at the threads!

 There is no know cure, so now your only hope is to just try and remember that this is for fun and that not everybody else will understand. But, the great people here can and do understand!
