Reel Mower Conversion
« on: February 27, 2008, 02:27:48 AM »
I was told (other-worldly-like) to snag the old reel mower we had laying around and get to it...

I had to cut some of the up tube (on the forks) off, at a slight angle to miss the shaft - pretty close, didn't really measure. I cut the other end of the forks off at the bend (save for later). The half of mower that's left doesn't cut - I'll probably cut the blades off anyway.

It seems that despite my best efforts (the forks just squeeze the motor to hold it on, the sprockets aren't aligned very well, etc) the chain stays on....even on bumpy grass/gravel. Neat, but...

I think I really want the small radiator motor out on the left though, spinning a weedwhacker head. I've got a treadmill motor I want to try in place of the current motor - all that's holding me back on that is a nut, go figure.

That's all for now I guess. take it easy

Blades on the wheels, like for a windmill? I thought about it but the wheels are plastic (+no bearings) so there's no good way to attach anything. In theory you could cast new wheels (which are gears) out of something else but that's beyond my capabilities at this point.

What I was really thinking of when I started this was Norm's swing generator. He's got a neat bike-based setup (last I checked) but maybe a converted reel mower would work too....maybe better, maybe not.

Ideally, I'd like to keep it fairly broad though; push/pull and it generates some power. What happens next should depend on what attachment is hooked up.

The weedwhacker attachment is kind of obvious. Despite having grazing animals and a small tractor with a brush hog, there's still weeds in places I can't get to easily. I don't like carrying the weedwhacker we've got now (tortured spine), plus it's an over-polluting 2 stroke. If I can make a human-powered whacker with wheels...for a total of $25...heck yeah, I gotta give that a shot.

I might be able to make an edger too. And an attachment with a battery, lights and small inverter for camping.

I dunno, I just figured it was past time to "make electricity from scratch" so I put in a few hours and that's what came out...a working prototype. Now I just need to get the nut for my treadmill motor so I can get that hooked up instead. take it easy

As a bike trailer/generator this thing is pretty sweet.

My meter only counts to 2 amps for some reason, but just pushing it 3 steps puts out 5v, 2amp (open). Really easy to push. While jogging with it I saw as much as 9v...if it was putting out 2.3amps (seems likely) that's like 20w.

Of course I can't jog for very long but I can ride a bike at that speed all day. And I guess if I got tired of the extra drag I could flip the mower over to stop generating power. Brilliant.

I used a 18 tooth sprocket on the mower shaft and a 16 tooth sprocket on the fan motor...for future reference.
