Rewind finished
« on: February 29, 2008, 02:07:26 PM »
Just finished the rewind , didnt quite have enough wire so soldered/heatshrinked some more on for the last 30 turns of the last coil .. they did start to get hard to insert with the last few coils :)

Next step will be to soak it all with epoxy etc , I've ordered some off ebay ..

Will get pictures soon ..

How did you unwind the old wire out of the stator?  Always seems like the wires are epoxied in these motors.

I just clipped it out, but making sure I was able to keep track of the connections/slots ..

Tested it on a 12v battery as a motor and it runs nice and smooth, slow , my tachometer says 100rpm but its not too reliable.

Yep, I think I'll try a 2*3 lenz first , 2' dia , 3' tall , should work out nice ..

I still have the arbour and hub from when I was using it as a hawt so it shouldnt be too hard.

Fungus;

Pretty nice work.

Glad to see at least a few folks on here that can do something besides bang on a keyboard professing how much they know.

Well done.

Keep us posted.

Nice work Fungus.

You must have the patience of a saint, winding and counting all those winds.

I look forward to see the next stage of your VAWT project - maybe prove the VAWT doubters wrong??

Keep it up.

Tried rewinding a couple of small motors...can

appreciate the labor involved...but of course

if it's fun...it's not work !

Nice Job !

Excellent work there Fungus.

You have crossed a barrier I didn't cross until I had 30 years more water under the bridge than yourself.

It requires patience and grit to see it all the way through and you have displayed both at a tender age.

I think you should bask in the satisfaction that you have achieved something not a lot of people have accomplished.

Well done.

Well done Fungus,

I tried a rewind on a 250W 3ph AC motor and gave up.

I lacked the patience and skill. Your fingers must be quite

firm by now :-)

Looks like you might be the boards new candidate for a good

rewinding tutorial so the rest of us have no excuse not to try it.

Once again, Good work Fungus

Thanks for the compliments :)

But this was a DC motor and with the slots being on the outside of the rotor it was relatively easy to do, with a normal induction motor I'd suspect it'd be a lot harder ..

Angus,

It looks VERY impressive indeed. When you mentioned in IRC you were going to take an Ametek apart I was thinking it'd couldn't be rebuilt to factory quality level (and told you so too... :) . But I must admit your job looks at least as good as the original one. I have at times too saved wound rotors (from series commutator motors, as found in drills etc.) to convert to a radial generator (with outer rotating magnet drum). I've even started to unwind some but quickly given up on the task. It takes a lot of effort and care/concentration/accuracy to do it. Kudos.

One thing I notice is that you seem to have filled the slot with more wire than was originally there (higher slotfill). Which is good, I think. But one thing I would add and for which I hope there is still room left is some kind of slot cover to keep the wires in the slots, even though this will be a slow-running generator. In induction motors they sometimes use small, thin (.5 mm) strips of GFRP (epoxy circuit board without the copper). You could perhaps cut up some strips and carefully shove them in? I'd also definitely try to varnish or otherwise secure the windings.

Again, an impressive job.

Peter.

I forgot to ask: do you have an estimate for how much time you spent on rewinding that rotor ?

I've probably got about 10 hours total into it , about 4 for unwinding, 5 or 6 for rewinding, and a couple just planning what to do ;-)

I am going to secure it all with epoxy, I've ordered that off ebay and it should be here soon, I've made up a small wooden 'cradle' for it to hold it up out of MDF.

I'll probably only get about 25w out of it but its a nice challenge to try :D

That is a fine looking job you did on that motor.having done several my self.i know how much work it is. the last one that i did was for a electric trolling motor. that was used for a hydro generator. worked well putting about 3 amps output. until water got in and ruined it.i also made several by making them into a alternator.by making commutator into a slip ring. and taking the other end of the winding off of the shaft. much easyer to make and puts out about the same.
