Four trojan club car batteries?
« on: March 02, 2008, 04:22:04 PM »
Today i met someone who has four trojan club car batteries. I think they are 100ah each and he wants one hundred dollars for the set of four. They were manufactured in october of 2006. Has anybody used these for solar or wind? And do you think this is a good deal? Your help is much appreciated. Batt size is 12.78 x 71/8 x11 Cant find out much about them but they are 80 to 100 ah, X4  they have been setting for about a month and they all read 12.47

Should i go for the 100 dollars?

No idea what they are, but even car batteries work ok for a short time and some do quite well if you limit cycling to 20%.

At that price I really can't see how you can go wrong, you can't get much of a decent long life battery for that sort of price so if you only get a year you must be on a winner.

Hi Flux

I think those are golf cart batteries and would be a steal at that price.I would think.

Is a "club car" what those yanks would call a "golf cart"?

If so, the key design difference over a car starter battery is that a "deep-cycle" battery has much thicker plates.

Use Google and search for the new price from a battery distributor, I would suspect 4 new batteries of this type (if indeed they are deep-cycle) would be over $300...

Hey,

I use Exide golf cart batteries from Sam's Club and mine were $48 each with core (old battery). These are 75 AH 6 volt units. I have a good deal more than four of them but the idea is the same. Running in 12V configuration four of mine would be 150 AH and cost $192 with cores. That's for brand new units.

My very first set of off grid units was a 4 battery setup that didn't last long. I learned how to take care of batteries by killing those. I would look into new units carefully before biting on used, and with no way to know how they were treate4d, batteries.

TAKE CARE.

 75AH?

The ones I get at Sams are 190-210AH.

I bought 4 Trojan T-100 6V batteries the other day for $20 (they all tested at 6.1V).

I heartily recommend visiting your local scrap metal dealer with a voltmeter and a car headlight bulb on a couple of wires (for voltage and load testing, respectively).  They're usually quite happy to sell batteries to you by the kilo/pound at scrap lead prices. ;-)

Club Car is a brand of golf cart - they come both in electric and IC versions. If the batteries are Trojan in such an application, they are indeed deep cycle type of the long-revered T105 series, and perfectly suitable for any Renewable power application.  Depending on previous usage, they should be good for several years as an inverter power source.

Hey Ghurd,

Yep, I was way the hell off. Mine are the 195 type. I don't know where I came up with that, unless I was looking at a single trolling motor battery I have for the Kubota starter. Later,

I believe the Sam's Club 6V Golf Cart batteries are the best deal going right now.

However, things change quick.

From what I can last recall (maybe off a bit).

Two 6V "T-105s" rated at ~200AH from Sam's are about $145 if the buyer brings 2 batteries to trade in (and the local Sam's takes a 7AH SLA the same as an 8D, "A battery is a battery" he said. Bringing 2 scrap 7AH SLAs saved me $20).

A 110~115AH marine battery is ~$95, with a trade in.  Short lived and low capacity.

A pair of L-16HCs is ~$750.  ~50% more capacity than 'T-105s' but only last 2~3 more years.

The math tells me it is a LOT cheaper to use Sam's golf cart batteries.  Dollars per year, amp hours of capacity, etc.

Sam's has 0% problem exchanging a bad (car) battery.  My experience.

Trojan 101% REFUSES (many people's experience) unless the operator can prove it was never abused even once. Try to prove that 100%!

It depends on the charge and discharge amps too.

The stuff I deal with is 3 to 25A max charge, 100ma to 50A discharge.

L-16s may be better with higher rates.  I don't know.

End rant.

Brian:  Buy the batteries.
