Strong winds in the UK
« on: March 10, 2008, 09:28:39 AM »
We've had weather warnings over the weekend telling us to expect strong with damaging gusts in the early hours of Monday.  The main problems are going to be coastal regions, where it also comes at the same time as high spring tides and they're expecting flooding.

But, I thought it was better not to take the chance, so last night at around 7pm, I dropped my turbine down, took off the tail and secured the blades.  This isn't as big a job as it sounds.  My turbine is on top of some scafold pole and that pole is secure to its mount by two U bolts, undoing 4 nuts drops the height by about 6 feet and takes it out of the wind (no, its very high up).  Undoing 2 screw clamps lets me take the tail out.  The whole thing took less than ten minutes working in the dark.

This morning it didn't seem half as bad as they said it might be, and I feel as if I chickened out a little.  I suppose it's best to look like you're acting responsibly when you're running something like that in a built up area that to take the risk.

Hi

I sort of battened down the hatches too (moved things so they couldn't blow over, etc) and it has turned out quite mild here also.

But better to have been warned and taken a little bit of effort to avoid needless damange than the alternative, IMHO.

Rgds

There is a large and strong disturbance that has come up through the states. After spawning tornados it moved into eastern Canada where it dumped large amounts of snow. Strong winds are associated with the system. This morning it is out in the Atlantic headed your way. - Please stand by - you are next.

You're right, it hit us in the early hours of this morning (weds).

My turbine is still down where I left it from the weelend, I was going to put it back up yesterday evening but thought better of it when I was the forecasts.

I miss seeing it; am I really wierd in that it's the first thing I check on every morning?
