-1kWh day today
« on: April 11, 2008, 07:27:49 AM »
Hi,

Family away again for a few days, and I so managed a day with the dial spun backwards after 24h.

The 2kWh consumption basically consists of the fridge/freezer and my Internet-facing servers, though I also microwaved a meal and used my laptop all day, etc, etc.

The PV system generated ~3kWh.

The main loads not used were the washing machine (~0.75kWh/load, 1+ per day) and the dishwasher.  To my embarrassment I realised that we'd never really tried the 'quickwash' which seems to basically do as good a job as the program[me] that we normally use, but with 66% of the power usage (0.86kWh vs 1.27kWh) and less detergent and water.  So we'll be using the quickwash where we can.

(Also, no TV used and less lighting when I'm on my own!)

Rgds

Nice one Damon!  That must feel good.

My dishwasher has a quickwash on it, on ours it misses out the drying program.  I always choose this, much to the chagrin of Mrs Slog, and find if I get to it at the end of the cycle and open the door whilst the pots (sorry USA, Dishes) are still hot, they dry nicely on their own.

As I say, it causes arguments because sometimes the pots aren't quite dry enough, but I as I point out, you don't dry the the 'manually washed' ones with a hairdryer!

I hope you're not becoming a power scrooge though.  I have visions of you sitting there in the dark counting your watts by candle light.

All I can say is that candles are very energy-inefficient!  B^>

(I read at night by off-grid solar-powered LED!)

My dishwasher is very low energy and keeps me warm at night in bed as well.

Buy a 20" LCD TV, 40W. I have a single 12V 75aH battery that runs my 14W light and 40W LCD HDTV for days on end.

Being single makes conservation so much easier.

Amazingly our current Sony Triniton (CRT) only uses ~60W, so getting an LCD which uses much less is harder than I had assumed!

But I don't watch TV at all, so that's no part of my usage... B^>

My Sony 32" Trinitron also only drew 60-65 watts.

My daus gave me a new 40" LCD For Father's Day last year that uses at least twice that much power. I wish that I had my old Sony back some times but with HD coming in next February, guess its for the best

Do you find that adjusting the screen brightness (or any of the other controls other than the OFF switch) makes any noticable difference to consumption?

Well, we're hitting another record today of over 6kWh from the grid-tie PV and still going strong.  That's more than our gross consumption even with the family all here!  B^>

And I've been rearranging the house, vacating the back bedroom I've been using as a study.  I've moved my desk into the master bedroom instead...

I have a 32 inch Element that has adjustable energy rating, i monitored the watts and it goes from 70W to 100W depending on the brightness.

I also have 19" LCD screens that are 45W. Amazing, huh? Less than a light bulb.
