wind solar etc
« on: April 16, 2008, 10:03:45 PM »

Is there any value in all of us reporting in the same Units?  The

only reason for the question, is that, all of the smart people are

from all over the globe.  Those conversion calculators are cheap.  And

there are probably things on the Net that are better.

It would save the moderators time, and their time is an important

asset.

But then again maybe they can do the conversions in a thought.

Maybe this should have been in rants, if so, sorry Tom.

Personally I like folks just blurting out in the manner they are accustomed . We'll let the bean counters worry about the rest.

personally i find it very irritating when someone uses nonsense units like amps per hour or watts per day etc.  you never know what kind of crazy math they used to come up with there numbers and anyone who blathers on about such units gets promptly ignored by me because there numbers are nonsense because they are not standard units like amp hour, watt hour or kilowatt hour. i can deal with both metric and standard units that is what conversion calculators are for but please use a unit that exists. and do try to not say watts when you mean watt hours even old hands do this and it just confuses the newbies....

I was looking at batteries today.  I looked all over the label, but I couldn't find the Ohm Hours rating.  Could you guys help me with that?   :-)

On all the batteries I have ever run across the Ohm Hours rating is on the back side of the label, just peel it off to check it.

If you can't find that rating they have left Ohm and changed ownership, you only have them for a limited time.

Simple math.  If the variables are understood.

I am working on the equation.

Pleasing colors are always 10.

Trojan purple is about a 6, depending on who you ask.

White or Black are usually 9 or 2, depending on who you ask.

Mauve is obviously valued at 16.

Heavy is rated at 4 to 14, on a scale of 1 to 10.

Battery life is rated at between 4 and 18, on a scale of 1 to 10.

Some is 7, great is about 10, bunches is over 13, while a hole lot better than users claim is 22 or more.

"OK" almost works, sometimes.

"Not Bad" means it worked, once.

"As Expected" means pretty good, but not good.

"Good" is almost OK.

"High" is usually too much.

"Perfect" is almost good, but not quite, and considerably less than expected.

Butt their are sum variations.

No.  We could all agree to use the MKS system (meters - kilograms - seconds), but then you have to say good bye to watts, as the MKS unit for power would be joules/sec.  Wait a minute.  What's a joule, anyway?  As I said, no, so forget it.

As long as they use some kind of standard unit and use it correctly, I can usually decipher it.  I always see posts listing energy in units of power and power in units of energy.  Amps at a voltage are fine for power, but amp hours don't make any sense, Joules for Power or Watts for energy don't make a lot of sense either without a time parameter.  It would be like saying I traveled at 3 meters per second without anything else and asking how far I went.  Similarly if I traveled 30 miles, how fast was I going.

Still many folks are just starting out and some of us, myself included of course, slip up from time to time.  Usually we can get to the bottom of it with a few questions and answers to help someone out or figure out what was going on.  I don't think ignorance or even sloppiness should be capital offenses.  Just have fun with this.  Rich

I don't know if you guys are joking or not.  I was able to find my Ohm hours pretty easy.

I take the rpm of my genny and divide it by the hour of the day.  Then I take that number and plug it into an online calculator I found.  It tells you your estimated battery capacity (measured in Ohm deciminutes because it is metric but I think he's writing a standard version) based upon the lattitude of your tower.

I pretty much trust it because nobody would go through all the trouble of writing a web page if they didn't know what they were talking about.  I wrap my power cords around a ferrite core... 2 turns per amp and that usually allows it to run off of 12v.  That's on the guys website too.  No diodes or rectifiers needed.  My pc now runs off of 2 6v lantern batteries.  If I'm lying then tell me HOW CAN I BE posting if I'm lying???

I plant potatos under my monitor.  It grows 2 for every one used.

I am saving the extra potatos to go off-grid.

Then buy an LCD monitor with the savings, doubling the production per potato used.

Watt potato, 2 potato, 3 potato, overunity...

Too late.  Big oil offered me a bookoo-bazzillion dollars for the idea.

And I took it, like everyone before me.

US$, GBP, Marks, Euros...  No matter... Next week, starting on Tuesday at noon, they will all be know as "ghurds".

They gave me a post-dated check.

The guys who wrote the check (John Smith and William Jones) explained why this kind of transition can not happen on a Monday.

You know,

Just a few postings of that picture in the right places, or actually showing someone how the potato is plugged into your PC, and suddenly there will be people in this world who swear they "know a guy" or "heard about a guy" who ran a computer with a potato.  Nobody will remember you specifically, and the source of the (mis)information will be lost over time.  Too funny. That's how that kind of thing gets started.

Kinda like the "hydrocarbon powered ECO-Vehicle" bumper stickers I bought from Glenn Beck.  You should see the stories about people getting interested in hyrdocarbons to save the earth.

I love that potato picture.  We should start a thread of people showing all the stuff they run off of potatoes.

Is this similar to making a battery with a lemon, a nail, and a penny? This picture is worth a kilo-word.

Whats the C20 rating on an average potato? After its is so drained it begins sagging when the hard drive tries to spin up, you can brew it into ethanol to power your back-up 1.1 Watt micro-generator:

Similar, except that Kurt's been able to develop a way to simply plug directly into the potato - no nail or penny necessary.

Did any of you guys make the lemon battery in science class.  Why not a potato battery, it could open up a whole new avenue for Idaho farmers, solving the energy crisis.  I believe a tomato battery was in the works until it was suppressed by some conspiracy or other too.  No, wait, it IS the next big thing, that's the ticket, better get on board by sending me a hundred dollars now I have the secret formula for it developed by a person with a real PHD and scientifically proven to put out more power than the sunlight used to grow it.  It's posted on the internet, so it must be true.  Get on board now.   Rich

P.S. Note to the stupid, this is sarcasm, please don't actually look me up and send me a hundred dollars - there actually is no tomato battery in the works here.

oh - darn it Rich!  I didn't read your entire posting until AFTER I sent the $100.  So go ahead and just "Return to Sender," okay?  Or better yet, can you just send me $100 back now?  You should get the one I sent in a day or so.  That'll speed up the process.
