Golf Cart Batteries
« on: April 17, 2008, 03:21:14 AM »
We happened by a Sam's Club today, and I had a quick gander at their battery department.

Previously I'd been to WalMart and found a 125AH 12v deep cycle battery for $74.95.  It was the only battery that had this high of an AH rating.  Most, even with several hundred CCA's, only had maybe 35AH ratings.  That goes along with what the experts on here say - "starting" batteries are for short bursts of high current, not deep discharges.  But I digress.

Sam's had some "commercial" batteries that were about twice the width of your run-of-the-mill car battery.  Surely these would be good candidates, some with upwards of 1000 cold cranking amps.  No AH ratings on these, so I moved along.

Then I saw them.  "Energizer GC-2" Golf Cart Batteries.  Holy Cow.  I have never seen a battery that big.  It was about 50% taller than a regular car battery and over twice as wide.  It had obviously-removable caps over all the cells, and it weighed a TON.  Then I looked closer - $67 for 225AH!   Holy Cow again!

Then I saw what REALLY made me appreciate the difference between Golf Cart and every other battery in the whole place - This humongous beast was a SIX VOLT BATTERY!  So to get your 12 volts, you're talking about a battery footprint that is literally FOUR TIMES LARGER than a regular car battery.

I've seen Ghurd on here mention the weight to people.  Yes Sir.  He's absolutely right.  You cannot mistake these things for anything else.

So if you're like me, looking through a shelf of ordinary-sized car batteries, comparing all the labels, ratings, deep cycle, marine, whatever... STOP.  You're not even close.  Look for something that makes your back hurt just looking at it.  Look for the "I need an associate to carry this for me" kind of battery.

No matter how much you guys who are "in the know" describe the right kind of battery, I never got an appreciation until today!

By the way, they also had an 8v version.  Don't see how we could use that.  But you 24v or 48v guys might be able to get away with fewer batts that way.

Yep,

I was in Sams recently looking for these and found an empty pallet where they should have been. I ended up with a couple of equivalent interstate industrial deep cycle batteries with the same rating but at twice the price from a local auto dealer (Sams is 80 miles away).

The L-16-Hs 6 volt are 2and a half times the size and weight of the golf cart battery.

Wow.  Then again, at 420 AH rating, I can see why!

I called our local sams, they said they did not carry golf batteries.

The best I found were excides 225aH 6V for $90 per. I can't even seem to find those energizers by googling.

My marine deep cycles have been working great so far. I accidentally bought a starting battery and it lasted like 10 minutes before needing recharge. I returned it for another deep cycle.

These things are darned heavy - but at a savings of $30 apiece, you might want to find someone on here who lives semi-close to you and has a Sam's Club nearby that carries them.

Also, never know - the clerk may not have known what they were talking about.

"the clerk may not have known what they were talking about"

My money is on that one... and/or they just don't care.  The guy was just hired after being fired from McD's because of an incident involving pickle quantities?

And online won't show it, because Sam's would look like robbers if they charged what it actually cost to ship a wet battery.

Looks like Wally-World bought the 'Energizer' name long ago for use on golf cart type batteries.

Just like k mart bought the names white and westinghouse.  Call k mart and ask about a 1940's tube that was obsolete before his parents were born.

Remember, you know more about this stuff than he does,

That sounds bad.  I didn't intend it that way.

Maybe call and ask "How Many" #1194 they have in stock?

Like "#1194 ENER GC2", and if they still cost $68.87 each, if the new $9 core charge is in effect, like you saw online.

Maybe that will get his attention.

Guys see if you can find an interstate dealer near you.  They will have what they call blimished batteries.  These are new batteries however the cases are deformed.  They sell them at the Tampa, FL interstate dealer for $35 bucks plus and $18 core charge if you have no core.  I have 10 of them and very pleased thus far.

Model# U2200  6V 232 Ah Capacity(20 HR)

I bet the factory is near you!

They won't ship them for that price.

yes that is you pick up.  But if you buying 10 or 20 the drive may be worth it even at $3.50 a gallon.

I called my local Interstate batt dealer a couple weeks ago about that.

He told me the cost of the U2200 'scuffed up'  battery is $60 plus $15 core.

He said they rarely ever get them. So I guess those dealerships must vary from place to place.

Instead I just got the new Energizer GC2 6v golf cart batts (220AH ea) at Sammy club ($67 ea) like others here.  They have the one year full replacement warranty at least.

They are quite heavy without a carry strap , so better do some exercises before hefting them in and out of the trunk.  I forgot and strained my back.

The batteries are doing great though.

Yes that's an advantage being in Florida.  Lots of golf carts equal lots of batteries.  Still $67 is not bad at all plus you get the warranty!  (on 30 days on these)  The interstate store in Tampa FL (About an hour and 1/2 from my home had 40 instock.

I had to go back to Sams today and found a whole new pallet of batteries had been placed so I brought 2 more home at $67 ea plus a $9 core charge. :)

I forgot to mention that my Sams batteries are Powerfast by Interstate not Energizers. They are identical to the Interstate U2200's I paid twice the price for except the case is black instead of white.

Where in tampa is the interstate dealer? I'm in Parrish all next week and haven't been able to find blems in Atlanta. Sure would be nice to get some while here. Even tried to get the l-16's but thet don't stock them. The sales man said they never have anyone ask for  them. Really doesn't suprise me though cause haven't seem any RE up there except on my own roof.

My battery bank is made up of 500Ah 2V cells.  Each one is about 20" high by 6" wide by 18" deep, and weighs around 50kg.  I bought them used from a acrap metal dealer.

But you should see the BIG ones (1500Ah) that he had for sale! ;-)

Z, Thanks address. I'm doing the low volt at the new Post office. Pulling out Wed. afternoon for West Palm, but will be back next month to trim if the schedule holds. Look me up if you have a chance.
