2HP Motor for conversion or too small
« on: November 22, 2008, 11:58:51 PM »
G'day Guy's,

Well before I embark on my 10kw motor conversion I reckon it's best to do a smaller one first to gat the hang of it. I've been thinking for a bit of fun making a downwind turbine and a small motor conversion might be a good cheap way to go. The motor I found is brand new its a 2hp 4 pole.

I took some ohm readings once I found and undid the star point connection and found each phase to be around 7.6 ohms. The stator bore is 98mm x 60mm long and by using ohms law @ 28 volts the best I would see is 100 watts. My idea is to run wild AC thru some non-polarised caps so I should see more current but as I'm pretty green with conversions will the 7.6 ohms limit my power.

Cheers Bryan

You can count 60 watts per tap at 28 volts. Looks like 24 and 25 awg . At 7.6 ohms per tap you can get 50 volts open at 200 rpm . Over all 6 taps at 2  amps puts you well above 100 watts total. Looks good for a open mount weather wise and plenty of weight to balance a down wind blade set. Down wind needs zero to very slight cog to be effective .The shorting bars on the rotor look like just a bit less than 3/8 inch so 1/4 x 1/2 mags will fit a 2 7/8 " arc nicely .

I do a rought cut by chucking the rotor in a drill press and a grinder with a new wheel .This  saves a lot of time and tool for a 5/16 cut and you can save the aluminum for end bonding also  to gage the inset for your  mags (slightly in set to account for bearing slop and wear )

After all the magnets are in, if the voltage is high enough, split the coils in each phase.

If you can find were the 2nd coil jumps to the 3rd coil of each phase, can break each phase into 2 series coils in parallel with the other 2.

Reduces the resistance, but it will need double the RPMs.

Sometimes the jumpers are easy to find.  Sometimes not.

Hi Bryan,, I'm also interested in these 'downwind" mill blades..

No tail sounds like a good thing to me ,,,,I,m on IRC every morning early if you want to chat.
