8 AWG cable has arrived :)
« on: February 06, 2009, 12:05:02 PM »
Yippee,

My cable, ammeter and cable fittings arrived today and I can't wait to get it all sorted. Oh.... the ammeter was meant to arrive with a shunt. Damm it!!! Looks like I won't see any power outputs till next week :(

Chris

I have seen some shunt and meter combinations where the "shunt" was what looked like a shorting jumper between the terminals. Kind of old time auto dash mounted ones at least but don't toss anything from the packing until you go through it close. They could be quite small.

Just an item to consider.

I don't have one now or I would toss up a photo.

Some had internal shunts, too.

Good Luck with it!

Take a look at the ammeter. If it mentions fsd of 75 or similar mV then it needs a shunt and probably has small terminals.

Up to about 50A they can have internal shunts and the thing will just say A or amps on the dial with no fsd mV figure. It will have heavier terminals capable of carrying the rated current.

As Tom Said it may also have an external shunt attached across the terminals at the back but there is usually some comment such as fsd mv or external shunt in those cases.

Depends on the manufacturer. If moving iron it will be direct. If digital then it will be intended to use with a shunt.

Make a shunt with a coil of wire that is roughly the ampacity of what your output is plus 20 % .Use terminalsto cnnect both ends  and place a screw terminal that will slide on the coil (Col around 4 inch pipe and expand the coil for clearance .

Set up two meters and start a 10 amp load (most meters will run 10 amps )with the other meter land the neg probe on the slide term and slide long the coil until you get 10 ma and your good tape off the terminals and dip in liquid tape or use several coats of pant.

Of coarse ma now translates to amps.

Yes the ammeter is a 50MV type so I'm glad I didn't try and wire it up!

The correct shunt arrived today :) so just got to connect it up.

Only problem now is there is absolutely no wind at all. Why does that always happen?
