Spring is on the way ....
« on: March 14, 2009, 06:10:52 PM »
Well, once again an about me post.

Been trying to find a good, stout winch for turbine raising.

Found this on Friday last:

Bigger and better pics are over here:

I link to the gallery because the local hosted pictures are a real anal pain to use. Plus they are high resolution photos you can see if interested. The winch came off a scrapped WWII repair ship [USS Jason ar-8]

I took this animal apart to inspect bearings or bushings in it. Guess what? It has none!

My question is not about that girlie man winch but about an idea I had for an equalizing charger for my new battery bank that I cannot quite get enough power into from either RE or the inverters charger.

I have this 15.5 horse Tecumseh vertical shaft gas motor I took off my lawn mower when we quit mowing lawn.

It runs perfectly and while it is 15 years old it seems strong yet.

Question 1:

With 15 horse available and a 600 amp hour 24 volt battery bank what should I look for in a common automotive alternator that can shove 60 to say 100 amps into this bank? Seems the motor should be quite capable of this level of power even throttled down.

It must be capable of adjusting the output so an external regulator will be needed.

Currently I would run on gasoline but would investigate wood gas as an option in future.

Thats my newbie question of the day.

Tom the Leese Neville sp? series is very stout and if you have a good old fashioned alternator repair shop they can hook you up with one. My local shop was going to build 2 to go in series for my lister to charge my 48 volt bank for like 200 bucks. i was going to regulate with a spare mx60.

I think they have a rather stout and smart regulator for 24 volt to you may be able to use?

halfcrazy;

I could call the local truck shop I guess. I was hoping to find a take off from the only local remaining junkyard.

I had thought others used common GM alts like from a Cadillac to do this and just jacked up the field strength to get in the 24 volt range. Seems GM used external regulators but been years since I messed with wrenching on cars and then it was Ford or Mopar. I am willing to gang them up for higher voltage if I can get there from locally available parts.

A trip to a bigger Metro area kills the budget for a cheapskate like me.

Leece Neville was in my mental list but not much to choose from here in Hicksville for Truck repair or alternator rebuilders.

Thanks for the response.

Tom the newer GM's are internally regulated they have been for a good number of years. the real new GM's may be external but say 99 back was internal. I know a gm alternator can charge 24 volts i had one here i bought that was set up for it. I will look thru the shop tommorow and see if it is still kicking around and if so you can have it.
