Hi, I have had a hard time looking and looking at my tower sections
the last couple of years and been trying to dream up the solutions
to make it all work.
Well, since work is a little slow right now I have had the time to get
to it. I came a cross a Rohn 45g at the salvage yard and bought
it for scrap metal price.
I knew I could make it work but my welding skills were not up to
the task yet. I got 5- 10' sections and a 9' tapered top
for a total of 59'. I think I paid about $250 for the lot.
So, around the beginning of spring I got the tilting base done.
Last week I came up with how to make the top work. (This is what
I wanted to share.) The top is 2" od tube and only about 2' long coming
out of the 3 legs. I know the thing to do is just not use the top
section and make an adapter for a mill. But I need to go as high as I can.
O.K. I found using spring steel for a shim ( the spring in a broken
tape measure) to go from 1 size to another, when going from tube to
tube, was the answer. It worked really slick.
I found 5' of 1-3/4" od to go half way in the 2" with shimming top and
middle and bottom. Then 6' of the same 2" tube over that. Nicely welded
at mid section and where the shim was ( I made a little slot top and
bottom). Over that 2" pipe and then 2-1/2" pipe fit nicely.
Now I feel good about what I have. I thought the spring steel made
the first connections very solid and a must for adding on to and
adapting to pipe for the top section.
