Portuguese Cities Expand Installation of LED based Street Lights
« on: September 06, 2009, 01:44:52 AM »

Installation work in a further 20 Portuguese municipalities is expected to have been completed this fall.

The UrbanLED luminaires were introduced in April 2009, when they were installed on a street in the Portuguese town of Pombal. The solution, which uses LUXEON Rebel power LEDs from Philips Lumileds, provide an attractive combination of power efficiency, CRI, uniform light distribution and low maintenance and repair costs. These qualities have seen it quickly gain favor with other municipalities in Portugal. During the summer, UrbanLED street lights have been installed on streets in the towns of Alcochete, Moita, Barreiro, Arraiolos, Pombal, Santa Maria de Feira Vale de Cambra, Estarreja, Coimbra and Torres Vedras.

The installations have been carried out by EnergiaViva and the installations are as popular with residents as with municipality officials. The white light from the UrbanLED transforms areas that were previously a dark yellowish color from the high-pressure sodium lamps that they replace. The forecast implementation of UrbanLED in towns and cities around Portugal is also proof of the compelling financial case that this high-efficiency, low-maintenance street lighting solution offers. The accelerating roll-out of LED street lighting means that high-pressure sodium lamps could begin to be eliminated from Portuguese streets.

The mayor of Lauderhill tried to get Obama stimulus money to install LED street lights, but FPL said "Why bother? it won't save you money" The power company doesn't benefit from decreased consumption and they aren't going to help.

I could see the power companys using these for lowered maintanince costs, and where I am, the power company charges per light, not how much it costs to run, so if it cost less they see more money.

Don't anyone care about the planet?

Wouldn't it all be more green with leds?

Being America one of the most polluting Countries in the world, some good examples should come from there!

Could someone smack Obama for me :)

Portugal is just a small country..but 29,4% of energy is already coming from green energies (most wind power).

Power company wants everyone to use low consumption lights, A+ fridges etc etc...but maybe that's for cutting expenses with power that we import from other countries.

-> 14,5% is the average of all European Union country's

-> 2% is the value of green power produced in America

Maybe they are not counting the otherpower.com users :)

Some countries need to change there policies...the world belongs to everyone.
