About ready to give up
« on: October 27, 2009, 05:04:41 PM »
Since the "upgrade" this board is often almost unusable, I'll type out a reply to a post and hit submit and get "the requested url is unavailable we are upgrading" or I try to log on and get the same message two or three times and on the fourth I get on.

My 17 footer is coming along and I'm gonna have a jillion questions but I don't know.

This might sound stoopid, but, I have been holding the left mouse button down for a tad bit longer, when I click around this site, and, I rarely get the "Upgrading" page, where as I get it regular, if I click too fast ???

Since you brought it up:

Join the club. Lots of issues that are affecting many users if the feedback I get is any indicator.

We have had a pretty good run but I think the writing is on the wall.

They should consider either killing it outright  or passing it on not let it die of neglect is my thinking these days.

Sad. This community deserves better.

I just cannot sit around quietly watching it die.anymore.

'Nuff sed.

I know a lot of RE things are being resolved via email because the board is so slow.

And even though I am not an editor or anything, can't figure out how to get IRC to work, and can barely check my own email, but I hear the chatter.

I believe it is a relatively simple problem with the from-end links not meshing with the back-end.

I know my wife has this type of problem at work almost daily.

The server itself is not jambed up.  It is just confused.

Example.  The board, store, and photos are on the same server?  I think that's what I read.

We all know how long it takes to load a story via the links.

So a photo should take as long too, right?

Time how long it takes this photo, on this server, to load...

http://www.fieldlines.com/images/scimages/2050/ugly30efkabuckt.jpg

That is something it is not confused about, so it loads fast.

Leading me to believe it is a minor language glitch someone very familiar with the software could fix in a short time.

I am not the only one who believes that, and I am the last person who should say anything, but nobody else said it publicly.

I think I'm going to tick off a person or two by posting a response here and if I get booted.,, well,, so be it, but here goes.

BTW: There's another one of these going on over in reviews :-/

Since the update this forum has been slow at times, for a bit I thought it might be my browsers, so I did the IT thing and ran ccleaner to clear out any possible nasties.  Nope still slow, poped a few emails out to see what's up. Then came the "WE'RE moving notice. OKAY made sense.

Only real replies I got where from NON-Admin people ( TomW my apologies for asking you when those emails should've all gone to ADMIN) ....Until I sent one showing the back door to ALL the pics Forum and NON-Forum alike was wide open :-(), THAT got a response.

As Ghurd has said, I'm been emailing stuff instead of posting since those go through. However they can only go so deep before the thought gets lost.

I now only use this forum as a tool, no longer am I currently using it as a social networking forum. Email will work just fine for that.

Publicly I offered to help if having a second server would make things better, no response, maybe the ADMINs don't think they need it? or maybe they don't believe me??, makes no diff to me,,, I offered, and got NO response.

For ALL those complaining: have you taken a look at how fast the "otherpower" loads?

Not just the main page, but ALL the buttons and links, they go as fast as a co-located hosted server should.

I hope I'm wrong, but maybe, just maybe, the forum needs to go back to being just a forum, which in the beginning was merely a place to get answers for products.

I'll keep coming back here and checking on stuff and to help when possible, otherwise if it's running slow, I'll go the email route.

For the other post over in Reviews: Hidden adgenda? If so then that's fine, maybe they're moving into winter mode and trying to get things buttoned down, SNOW has already arrived thereabouts.

I remain hopefull that the bugs will get worked out, and not too many old timers go over to the website(s) that have been spawned by this one and not return.

Back to work;

I hope that everyone would keep coming back here.

I take this community a little bit like my girlfriend.

You should love your partner in ups and downs and now its downs.

This is one of the few sites I look at every day.

I don't post very often as unless I think I have some thing useful to add.

I this case I think you should cut the administrators some slack!

Every software task I have ever seen took 2 to 3 times the time to get working than expected, an I work in engineering!  This is with engineers decated to the task 8 hours a day.

If you were running this site, in your spare time just how long would it take you to do an upgrade?

For myself, I'll accept that the site isn't perfect and live with it until they can get it fixed. Giving feedback to the ADMIN's on problems found is helpful, wasting their time to responed to grousing isn't.

This site is special, let's keep it that way,

Etech

Just think how special it would be if it were as easy to use as any number of the thousands of other boards on the web.

I don't have any problems with the sites speed. It's lightning fast here in the UK, not getting any error messages either .

Hope they can fix it for those having problems.

Etech;

 I agree, to a point.

I try one of the last to complain and try to be helpful as possible, including offering both equipment and monetary.

I do run a small mirroring on a DSL line with does nothing but host *NIX distros for friends. It's not anything special, real-old HP with 4-200Mhz processors with 12 HDs & a couple nics, running a real old version of Mandrake 7.2.

I do this in the little spare time I have, because I like to be part of the solution not part of the nag-scene.

When emails go unanswered , I try not to off-handedly complain as I understand the dynamics of having a day job to pay for my stuff.

I stand by my offer to help...

Cheers;

Bruce S
