Happenings with SMF
« on: February 07, 2010, 02:17:45 PM »
Hi All,

This diary entry is a trackback to-

http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2009/12/22/18404/447

Anyhow theres been some talk from Admin and DanB about switching from Scoop to SMF.

I somewhat/recently began a forum (it was phpBB) then asked some questions to TomW, he recommended SMF.

So thru my hosting service, I was able to get a clean install of the SMF forum software. I figured "why not" and when with it. First-off, there was a serious reduction of spam. And a couple of users here contributed to my forum on SMF (also with the phpBB, before the change. I thank them for that, most users here on "www.fieldlines.com" are pretty knowledgable..

So recently I got to posting a topic, and I wanted "inline photo's/attachments to display. They would not with the SMF software... I have version 1.1.11 or some such, or as they call at SMF 1.x Im not using beta 2.0 or anything for my forum.

I remarked to Tom that I liked the feature(that Scoop has) of inline attachments/images in posts. But, with an standard install, I could not do this with SMF.

So, I went to the SMF support forum for 1.x SMF forums.

Here's a link-

They were able to resolve my issue in short order. Now I can do what the Scoop software does for postings with the SMF.

Here's an example-

This is the forum directory where I got the help-

so-far Im very impressed with the SMF

Ummmm,

The first video from u/tube and is not for "all" audiences, about near the end of it, you see the guy banging his head against the mirror. Actually this was me last night, as I was trying to alter the php script. I decided to throw in the towel, and started again this morning. After some sleep, I was able to try it a different way, and it worked. Needless to say, I was to exhausted by today, and decided to "not' pick up where I left off friday night with my post on my forum. I have decided the post is good enough. But the next one will be better, I expect, since my energys will be on the post itself, not changing the forum mods.

Kind of reminds me of that Super Man movie, with Richard Pryer as the computer programer, who is eaten by the mainframe computer(Superman 3 ?), with all the wires. You know what im talking about...

i don't know about all the rest you have going on there, but

we sure are liking SMF over at microcogen.info

we had a couple of very minor issues to sort out in the beginning, and now get

no spam.

it has become an incredibly active forum on its topic, with a very high signal to noise ratio.

sure would be nice to see this place follow suit, and move over to SMF

nod, nod, wink, wink,,,, hint, hint...

:)

nudge, nudge

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.
