Car motors 4 hydro
« on: January 04, 2005, 05:38:42 PM »
I want a DC motor for a hydro powerplant.  I'm only looking for low current - would be happy with 0.5 amp.

Was thinking of a paddlewheel built on old bicycle wheel, and a 'rubber band' driving a dc motor.  The current is slow, so I'd be relying on torque and gearing up.

Would a car wiper motor work?  Or maybe a fan motor from car heating system?

i am no expert but i have tryed the car heater fan motor and that thing has to spin way to fast to get good voltage out of it. I hooked mine to a drill and had to run it at full speed to get it to light up a small marker light. if you search this board you might find lots of info on small motors that will work.

Check this out http://www.otherpower.com/hamster.html

You could scale this up a bit and build a generator to fit you wheel

I had a windshield wiper motor from an old volkswagan put a crank on the wiper arm shaft cranking it at about 80 or 90 rpm lit a tail light pretty bright....don't know if the newer ones work as well.

If you're talking a very small amount of power they have these small electric screwdrivers that operate from 4 AA penlight batteries make a crank to fit in place of the screwdriver bit hook a bulb in place of the batteries and crank away  (they sell them in Dollar stores here for about $4 )

I've just been trying to get a little research and interest going on those car heater blower motors You're quite welcome to take a little trip over here.....

There is a lot of potential for these little critters...shame to see them go to waste...just like a few years back who would have thought that you could make a generator out of a garbage grinder motor?

           Have Fun!
