Using A Turbo a Turbine
« on: August 25, 2005, 02:24:56 PM »
HI,

Does anybody have experience with using a car or large diesel engine Turbo as a hydro turbine. I'm not sure since blade pitch is designed for high velocity air and bearings should probably be modified to seal them but it might make for a cheap project.

Here are a few for sale that might be interesting and there is always the local scrap yard.

You cannot use it, you will need a very high pressure (head) for some energy harvesting, some rotate 12,000 up to 30,000 RPM.

I have an old turbo sitting around and thought about this.  A quick test of hitting it with a garden hose at 50 PSI resulted in absolutely no movement. giving it a spin by hand and keeping the hose on it it still stopped.  So I've switched to building my own out of PVC It's cheap and seems pretty easy so far although cutting "scoops" (not sure what to call the paddle parts when they aren't flat) is taking some time with a hacksaw.
