Idea for Homebrew Hydro
« on: May 12, 2006, 08:16:52 PM »
Hey,

My Idea is to use a bicycle wheel with it's tyre removed and to collect up tin cans, cut them in half lengthways to form scoops and fix them onto the outside of the wheel. A PMG could be made to go on top of/replace the spokes and having the stator mounted to the frame. I would estimate maybe 15 cans for an average sized wheel? Alternatively the bicycle bearing could be taken out and replaced with a suitable generator. Do you think this would work/How much power could it potentially produce? Also, How would the cans be mounted to the wheel?

Also, the wheel would be mounted vertically with watert directed on it.

Open the other ends of the can....shape two

pieces of small board insert in can drive wedges

in both ends will shape the can [  ] into buckets

just like regular waterwheels ...looking forward

to seeing your completed project...don't forget

to paint it with a good enamel ...Rustoleum ??

hi fungus,

i had the same thoughts last summer, my pal has an ruined mill, and had been building up the pond. I put a 2inch pipe from the farm dump into his sliuce gate, with a fertilizer dispencer to make a nice jet about 30mm by 15, 2m head.

Got an old dyno hub bike wheel, with a flat bar hoop where the tyre went.

flat bar welded on to the hoop, radially, then the beer tins cut nearly in half and bent round and rivetted on.

it looked really good, went round nice, but pretty slow, tho good torque.

only made a few volts, and the cans tore at the rivets, and the fold.

now i'm trying smaller wheels, and stepper motors from printers.

reckon you need rpm for electric,

Although I guess tin cans would work better than beer cans as in that they are stronger , with beer cans just being aluminium.
