White LEDs from Hong-Kong on eBay
« on: July 14, 2005, 03:14:53 PM »
Hi all,

Doe anyone ever ordered the packages of 100 "white super bright LEDs" from Hong-Kong on eBay (search for white LED and sort by price). I'm trying to figure out what the catch is. 100 LED's for 0.01$, ok they overprice the shipping to have it at 15$ shipping, but still, that's 15 cents for a white led, I can't find anything cheaper.

How do they do it, what's the catch, or am I misinformed in the usual cost of these LED's (I thought they were easily above a dollar each in regular stores)

Ignorantly yours,

Sven

Sven, I have no way to know the quality of those led's but the price is not that far out of line with what I've seen elsewhere. I've used this guy in the past and have been quite happy with his led's.

www.b2cdirectly.com

He has cheaper freight but then actually charges for the led's. They work out to be about the same price overall.

I have ordered LED's from 'ubiditnow' on ebay at similar terms and have been very satisfied at the products. I don't know which seller your dealing with but these folks seem to be OK. Ex: 25 8000mcd $.01 $7.00 shipping, get package within a week. 100 for 15.01 seems pretty cheap but who knows? It all does seem to be kind of wierd but they do sell them that way.

I've ordered 10 20,000mcd leds from the hong-cong guy and was very satisfied. The only thing I didnt like was a giant boot print on my package where someone had steped on it. It was the shipper's fault thought and everything worked out fine.

BTW, most of the shipping price will actually go to shipping because customs will bite your arse when it comes to overseas packages

i have brought some white leds from hong kong before now and they seemed fine to me. think they jack up the shipping costs to A get your attention. B reduce the commission they pay ebay. think if you look at other items on ebay such as usb wireless modems they are 0.01 dollars but the shipping is  something like 20 dollars.

They get their money via the exchange rate. One US dollar = 7.77 Hong Kong dollar. This is how you get $40 microwaves at walmart.

Your $16 is  $124 to them!

The LEDs I purchased from there were great.

Expect shipping to be about 10 days.

Well, not quite.  Things are about 7.7 times as expensive there too!

Thanks for all the replies. I'll be sure to order some, apparently I was just misinformed about the normal price.

Make sure to get the highest MCD rating you can. They all use the same amount of power, but of course the higher the MCD rating the more light you get. They have 26,000 and even 35,000 MCD now....

I tried buying them to replace the white LED's in some lamps that have

got too dim to use. They lasted a little bit longer than the original

white LED's but just 3-4 weeks instead of 2 weeks so it wasn't really worth

the trouble.
