I use how much power?
« on: August 26, 2008, 01:51:48 AM »
So at about $1,000 per 200 watt panel I would spend something like $60K on solar panels to generate my own electricity (based on a 5 hr peak solar collection period), do people really spend that much money for solar panels or am I missing something?  I know my first step is conservation, which will reduce the size of a supplemental power system but it seems the alternatives simply cost too much up front, especially if I am not sure if I am staying in my house for more than 1 year from now (although making a windmill or installing solar panels sounds like fun).

I know I need to insulate my heating and cooling ducts, and besides checking doors and windows for air leaks, any other idea's to reduce energy consumption (all appliances are energy star or high efficiency and 3 years old or newer)?

Anyone know a good source for reducing drafts through windows or just in general reducing energy loss?

My house faces the south west so winter time is not too bad during the day (for the midwest).

Sorry, I find this off topic and these posts should not be let through. It is NOT the focus here to track things this wide of the mark.
