correct amp reading?
« on: November 12, 2007, 01:25:10 PM »
hello all,

have finished my 18 coil stator, 2 in hand 45 turns 3 phase,star,2 phases equal 1.14 ohms. 3/16 gap to mags. 11/16 to lamanites.

 13 inch magnet disc with 24 1 x 1/2 x 1/2 n 42 neo's.

at 108 rpm measuring 12.5 volts 4.4 amps into a car headlight and put a couple of tail lights all hooked together.(volts into dead battery that holds only 9 volts.)

at 185 rpm measures 20.3 volts into same battery, with a amp reading from 6 amps to 7.7 amps.

this is confusing to me as i thought that battery would hold down to 14.5 volts.

questions. is the dead battery messing up my readings.

            are my amp readings correct,

i am trying to nail my amps down,to figure out when to furl my 11 ft 3 blade prop, wiht a tsr of 6 before 15 amps. i am using alton moore's speadsheet.

my amp meter only goes to 10 amps, also have not been able to find anything to turn my disc faster.

is their a way of figuring this out with what i have, i was wanting to buy batteries last, as to insure my project is a success.(tower an everything still a long way to go)

also with a tsr of 6 do i figure my furling point with a tsr of 5 with this small of alternator,

would also like to thank G for his help with controller, was my very 1st kit and all went well, so anyone can do it.

thanks,windwatcher

Your battery is either fully charged and very small or scrap. You imply that it is scrap and any tests you do with it will be useless.Try with a good battery and the amps will go up and the volts hold down below 14.

Don't get too excited about tsr from blade calculators. If the alternator is powerful enough it will come well below tsr6 on load. There is little you can do about furling except keep your tail light and possibly reduce the hinge angle below 20 deg.

If you load your alternator into a good battery you may get a better idea but keeping to 12v 15A will be a challenge with an 11ft prop, you will reach that in very light winds.
