3 phase shunt
« on: December 29, 2008, 05:20:26 PM »
I have a 3 phase small wind turbine. As of now to shut this down I have to go out to the plug in at the base of the turbine unplug it and wrap bare wire around all 3 plug prongs. Does anyone know where to buy one that can be fitted just before the rectifier inside? Or are there any good home made designs you would like to share?

Thanks,Greg

All you need is a decent double pole switch to short the 3 phases. Connect the common of the contacts to one line and the other two contacts to the remaining ones. As it is before the rectifier the switch will not short the battery.

Choose a switch with plenty of reserve current rating.

I am using a 3-phase electrical contactor that came out of a heavy duty air conditioner.  eBay about 15$

On one side I short out all 3 phases, the other side is incoming AC from turbine.

I have a simple light switch that turns on the contactor, when switch is off contactor is open and turbine operates 'normally'.
