Increase coil count for a 3 phase???
« on: February 14, 2009, 07:50:11 PM »
Hi, if the coils of 3 phase standard configuration; 3 coils per phase with 12 magnets ; is increased to 4 coils per phase. Should the magnet count be increased and can that be determined by using a ratio and cross multiplying to determine the increase magnet count? Thanks in advance for any help received.

3 coils to 4 magnets for single layer 3 phase is the ratio you are looking for....

You can have any combination you want, simply each coil in a phase must have a magnet of the same polarity, say north, over it at any instant in time.

So a 4 coil/ phase 3 phase 16 magnets works for me, often it is more desirable to increase the phase count ie. 5 phase/ 3 coils /phase.
