What # Wire to use for 24V Machine given.....
« on: April 08, 2009, 07:34:10 PM »
Hey foiks, so Im going to build my first generator using Ed Lenz's design for his 6.5' machine.  His design is for a 12v alternator, using 40 turns of 14# wire.  I would like to make a 24v machine instead, so given everything else remains constant, Im going to use 80 turns instead of 40.  My problem is im not certain what # wire to use to ensure I dont run out of room in the 1/2" thick stator.  Is there some formula that can tell me the smallest # wire I can use and expect the coil to remain approx the same size, so that it will fit the same stator.  Thx folks!!!

I believe, according to Hugh Piggot's book, How to build a wind turbine, that if you go 3 sizes smaller it will be half the size so you would use 17 guage on 24v if 12v calls for 14.
