Volvo Parts for Wind Generator
« on: April 29, 2008, 02:39:17 AM »
On the otherpower.com site under experiments there were some 2003 posts of wind generators being built out of volvo suspension parts.  This sounds like something I would like to do - efficient or not.  I work at a wrecking yard that crushes every Volvo they get in (damn glad about it too since I pull parts...) - anyway, we just got one in and I've already got clearance to "salvage" parts from it.

I'll at least get a couple rotors from it...it's a 7 series.  And I have access to a brake lathe.

Just wondering if anyone was still messing with these.....

Thanks

Bob

Presumably not as you have got no replies.

If you have the bits there is no reason why you shouldn't use them. The hubs and brake discs will do, it will be heavy clumsy and inelegant compared with purpose built things but if you can get it in the air it will work ok. I wouldn't go for the old single rotor with laminated core unless you can get decent core material, but dual rotor is ok.

I certainly would avoid any of the early non furling designs. You can follow the later furling and still build the alternator from Volvo bits.
